NEW BRIGHTON T.C. O-MORROW’S PROGRAMS

TO-MORROW’S PROGRAMME The New Brighton Trotting Club has entered on its fiftieth anniversary, and for this reason to-morrow’s meeting will be watched with more than usual interest. The race track has made a fine recovery from the effects of the heavy rains, and while it may be heavy in places the going generally will be yielding but will provide a firm footing- . , , The big New Brighton track has seen the downfall of many prime favourites, and it is really a course for stayers. The win and place system of betting will be in operation. The programme is as follows: 12 noon— IMPROVERS’ HANDICAP, of £2OO. 3min 39sec class. Unhoppled trotters. One mile and a half. Allworthy .. scr Real BeU .. 36 Diversion .. scr Sagamore .. 36 Great Linnet scr Sphinx .. 48 Premier ..scr Reward .. 60 Syntax .. 12 Bill Grattan 72 Header .. 24 With a limit of 72 yards in the Im©rovers’ Handicap,, a small field will be all in favour of the back-markers, for few of those on the limit have displayed any marked ability over a mile and a half. The best of this division may prove to be Great Linnet, who on a holding track might outstay the remainder. On 36 yards is Sagamore, on his day a speedy ■ trotter, but not always showing the steadiness that goes to make a champion. This, however, is not championship class. Syntax, on 12 yards, has shown his best only occasionally, and ~a. more reliable trotter is Sphinx, who can be expected to go a solid race. A direct appeal is made by Reward, who raced well at Addington. The favourites may be Sagamore, Reward, and Great Linnet. 12.40 p.m.— BELFAST HANDICAP, of £2OO. 2min 56sec class: Nine furlongs and a half. KUrea .. scr _ Axworthy 12 Our Fay -. scr Lady Slipper 12 Palomar .. scr Oversight .. 12 Passport .. scr Purina • • Refund .. scr Shadow Son .. 12 The Belfast Handicap will be contested by a field of improving pacers, and it will be interesting to note the form of Special Edition, who last season proved himself a good class three-year-old. With a good beginning, he will be prominent, but in Regal he win find an older and more experienced pacer, who showed the greatest consistency last year. There will be strong support for Becky Direct, Blaydon, and Palomar of the limit, horses. The public’s choice may rest between Blaydon, Special Edition, and Regal. 1,25 SEAVIEW HANDICAP, of £225. 3mln 29sec class. One mile and a half. Agility ..scr Superior Rank scr - Attain ’ -. . scr , Loyal Avis .. 12 Dancing Pirate scr Pecunia .. 12 Ivy Peterson .. scr Loyal Pat .. 24 A small field of eight horses in the Seaview-Handicap, does not minimise the difficulties of speculators, and this should provide a fair test of merit. Loyal Pat, on 24 yards, is in great order and likely to improve-on his latest showings, but in Pecunia he will meet a fast-improving pacer. Dancing Pirate has some sterling performances to his credit and he may be one of the hardest to dispose of. Ivy Petersen showed signs of returning to form in her racing -at Addington, but the favourites should-be Dancing Pirate, Pecunia, and Loyal Pat. 2.5 p.m.— HARPER . HANDICAP, of £4OO. 3min 20sec class. One mile and a half. Graham Direct 12 Again in the Harper Handicap quality and not quantity is .represented, and again a short limit of 24 yards promises a most exciting race. Recent impressive work is represented by Donald Dhu, Cantata, and Gallant Knight, and all three are Jo race prominently. There will be bold attempts in this race to qualify Tor the New Zealand Cup, and .for this reason competition will be keem. _ A mile and a half race in going that will not be fast will suit Reporter, and most of the others will handle the track. The favourites are CantataDonald Dhu bracket. Gallant Knight, and Renown’s Best,

• The decisive win’by Sports Review at the recent Addington meeting is not likely to be forgotten by speculators in the Pacific Handicap, and R, Motz has this speedy pacer in ex- ; cellent order. He is set to meet a strong .field,' and one that has come; into favour in the last few days is Battlefield, while Harold Guy’s recent racing was impressive and South- 1 em Chief wlift do better on grass ttvati he did at Addington. The Wainoni Handicap looks like producing the best ’race of - the day, and speculation is to take a wide range. - Great Divide performed 'so well ’at Addington,'that in certain quarters he is regarded as a very; •likely winner; but he. is gradually getting up in the -really, go6d pacer, - but in .-.Windsor .Lass he will, meet a mare at the top of , her fortn. Icevus, on -36 yards, is, as genuine’ as they.-are' made, and,; if ; started. Graham Direct may be a consideration. It is a very open race ■and: possibly the places will be filled by Windsor’ 1 Lass. Bill B. has apparently improved a good deal* since going J Bryce’s stable, and'this was shown at the recent Addington meeting when he raced most generously;. _ He had previously proved himself in' saddle and he is likely to be the favourite for this race. Jesse Owens is a proved saddle-miler. and it should be remembered that Sports Review has a mile .record of 2mih 9 3-ssec. Repeal on his best form has the credentials, and this may be a great race. Horses for Courses • Many horseis have a preference for the big grass track at New Brighton, and among those that have shown form on this track and are'engaged at New Brighton to-morrov. are the following: September meeting: Timworthy, Token, Toorak, Loyal Pat, Guy Hugo, Repeal. October meeting: Gerfalcon, Gentleman Joe. Donor, Shadow Son, Icevus, Labourman. Aristotle, Gallant Knight. December meeting: Syntax, Colonel Axworthy, Gallant Knight, Nelson Eddy, Gentleman Joe, Loyal Avis, Morewa, Guy Hugo, Reward, Icevus, and Southern Chief. February meeting: Sagamore, Token, Mankind, Windsor Lass, Guy Hugo, Timworthy. It will be noted that several horses have shown a distinct liking for New Brighton, especially Guy Hugo, who w«pn three races there last year. Gallant Knight and Timworthy are others to which the adage “horses for courses” might apply.

TRIALS FOR TO-MORROW’S racing HEAVY TRACK LIKELY [THE PRESS Special Service.] DUNEDIN, August 31. Heavy rain at Wlngatui during the last 24 hours has left the course in a very sodden state, and though the weather prospect? are brighter now the course for Saturday’s racing will be heavy. The training tracks were choppy this morning and the sand, circuit was too heavy for fast, work. 1 Brothers in Action Gold Flight' and Dark Plight, the first of the southern visitors to arrive, were on the course, and the - latter has developed into a good-looking horse since racing as a two-year-old. Though suffering from a slight cold he ran right away from Islay Downs over half, a mile, running the first furlong in 12 4-ssec, and • completed the task in S2 2-ssec, going easily and handling the heavy going well.-: He will .be ridden by M. Caddy and now promises to start favourite in the President’s Handicap. Gold Plight," a brother to Dark Flight, will be given a run in the two-year-old parade arranged for Saturday, and on this morning’s. showing he is well forward for his engagement in the John Grigg Stakes. Fairfield also handled the going well, and in a five furlong gallop with Gusto beat, him by several lengths In, Imln 9 2-ssec, after running the first two furlongs in 25 2-Ssec. Foxy was much too good for Drlnkup over half a mile in 53 2-ssec, beginning very smartly and running the first furlong in 12 4-ssec.
