EXPANSION OF MEAT MARKET

Results of Experimental Shipments

(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) * . WELLINGTON, August 31. , When addressing . delegates at . the - annualmeeting of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board to-day, the chairman (Mr T. A. Duncan) said that a cable .message had been received from Singapore stating that ewe mutton was absolutely .unsaleable. It was very unfortunate because :it did not look as if it were possible for New Zealand producers to get any sale for their products in the East, with the exception of .'Some special small lots. . Mr Duacan’s remarks were made after he had dealt' with :a trial-shipment the board had sent to Canada. ■ “Encouraged by the success of last years -experimental shipment of lambs to eastern Canada,’’ he said, “and-having in mind the ur-

gent need to find an outlet for our mutton and lamb in new markets, the board this year had sent four shipments of mutton and lamb to Toronto and Montreal. The quantity consigned this year was almost' double ;last year’s initial venture, and although it was still relatively small in volume it r was a beginning. If only a regular trade could be built up with Canada it would be of great. benefit to New Zealand, particularly at the present time, when vNew Zealand producers are faced with restriction in their principal market, the United Kingdom.”
