CHAMPIONSHIP DATES ARRANGED ANNUAL N.Z. COUNCIL MEETING TOURS BY OVERSEAS TEAMS (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON,'August 31. It was announced at the annual meeting of the council of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis ‘Association to-night that a world-renowned team of professional players, comprising J. D. Budge, W. T. Tllden, H. Ellsworth Vines, and L. R. Stoefen, may tour the Dominion. next January. The following dates had been fixed for the 1939-40 season:—New Zealand pionships at Wellington. February .10 to 17; New Zealand Junior championships at Wellington, January 17 to 20; North Island championships at Palmerston North,- January 10 to 13; South.lsland. championships at Timaru, New jYear. Moving the (adoption of the annual report, the chairman; of _ the management committee said that preliminary- reports from, the manager of the New Zealand team in the Dav.is Cup competition showed that the expenses would be covered by the gate takings. . Bromwich, Crawford, and McGrath were anxious to visit New Zealand for the centennial tournaments. There was little prospect of European players visiting Australia and New Zealand- except possibly the Jugoslav Davis Cup team, which may be visaing Australia at the conclusion of its American tour.

The Manawatu Association put forward the following notice of motion: “That no competitor in intermediate events shall take part- in any event except handicaps at the same tournament.” After a long discussion the motion was defeated by a large majority. It was stated that advice.had been received that a professional team consisting of Budge, Vines, Tilden, and Stoefen,-had offered to. come to New Zealand at the end of their Australian tour about the middle of , January next. The suggestion was to play three-day week-end matches in the major centres and one-day matches in the smaller centres. Gotz. _ NORTH LINWQOD- CLUB ELECTION OK'OFFICERS The annual meeting of the North Un-wood-Tennis Club was held last Tuesday. There was a good attendance. The annual report showed that numerous Improvements had been made to the club’s property, notably the erection of an honours board and the construction of a celling in the pavilion. . The membership increased considerably during the last season, especially among the juniors. The balance-sheet showed the club to bp in a sound financial position.

The. congratulations .of the club Wtere extended to the .following players:—Miss H. Elsotn, for being selected to represent Canterbury in the Nunnelley Casket match against Wellington;. M.
