THURSDAY (Before Mr B. C. Bevvey, 0.M. - ) REMANDED James Dyer Morris Balloch and Edwin Ernest Balloch, who were represented by Mr K. G. Archer, were remanded to September 4 on six joint charges of theft and one of conversion. James Dyer Morris Balloch also appeared on four further charges of theft. Most of the charges concern the alleged taking of petrol and of motor accessories. VALUELESS CHEQUES Roy Poison (Mr K. G. Archer), who pleaded guilty to 12 charges of issuing valueless cheques to various city firm's, was sentenced to a total of 12 months’ imprisonment. Detective-Sergeant J. McClung said that by depositing £2, the accused had opened ’ accounts at, and received cheque-books from, two city banks. One account was under the name of G. R. Edwards, and the other in the name of P. Acton-Adams. The face value of the cheques issued was £95 Cs 4d, and goods amounting to £6 5s 6d had been recovered. The rest of the money had been spent. Poison was a married man with one child,. He had recently been discharged from prison and had a bad record,' added the detective-sergeant. Mr Archer said that Poison blamed drink and bad company for the offences. He was really appearing on behalf of accused’s wife, who was prepared to stand by him. On each of the first two charges Poison was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, the sentences to be cumulative. On the others Me was convicted and discharged. CROSSING LINE WHEN NOT CLEAR Leonard Colin Thomson was fined 20s for crossing a railway line when it was not clear. On a similar charge William Hlet was also fined 20s. FOUND ON LICENCED PREMISES Bernard Vincent O’Ctmnell was fined £2 and ordered to pay costs for being found on licensed premises after hours. PROBATION ORDERED Phyllis Blythe appeared for sentence on two charges of theft. , On the first charge she was admitted to probation for three years, and on the second she was convicted and discharged. CHANGED ADDRESS NOT? NOTIFIED Douglas Ellis Dali was ordered to pay costs on a charge that, being a rifle owner, he failed to notify his change of address. CHIMNEY ON FIRE For allowing his chimney to catch fire, MacKenzie Lester was fined 10s and ordered to pay costs. SUNDAY TRADING A charge of Sunday trading against James Mcllraith was dismissed on payment of costs. RnBAf!H OF PROHIBITION ORDER , John Walter Matthews was fined 20s and ordered to pay costs for a breach of a prohibition order. CHARGE OF ASSAULT Thomas Joseph Franz- Green was fined £3 and ordered to pay costs, in default 14 days’ imprisonment, for assaulting George Robert Brown. On a further charge of boarding a moving train he was convicted and discharged. .WANDERING SHEEP, . Alexander Hamilton Forbes, a farmer (Mr F. D. Sargent), pleaded not guilty to a charge of permitting sheep to wander.
