(Received August 22, 7.10 p.m.) BOST01?, August 21. American lawn tennis doubles championship goes overseas for the first time since 1919, A*K. Quist and J, Bromwich (Australia) beating'J. H. Crawford and H. C. Hopman, 8-6, 6-1, 6-4, in. the final, played at Longwood. This was the first occasion on which an American combination had not played in the final. When N. E. Brookes and 'G. L. Patterson won the championship, 20 years ago, they were .the doubles combination for Australia, at that time holder of the Davis Cup. Crawford entered the match not in shape, because of a recurrence of athlete’s foot.

Twelve hundred attended the match, a better crowd than was expected. Quist and Bromwich did not play to their peak in the last week, resulting in some speculation as to whether they were becoming stale before the next fortnight’s more important contests. In spite of the score, the match was close all the way, with most of the games going to deuce., Hopman, serving in the crucial tenth game in the first- set, had a set point, but Crawford outed a smash and the set was deuced. Hopman’s service was finally broken in the fourteenth again, after staving off the final point twice. In the women’s doubles final, Miss Marble and Mrs Fabyan beat Miss Stammers and Mrs Hammersley, 7-5, 8-6. Hopman and Miss Marble won the mixed doubles title, beating Cooke and Miss Fabyan. 9-7, P-1.

He considers Australia’s chances of winning the Davis Clip three to one on paper, but “a little better than even money when it comes to a showdown because there is always the risk of mishaps,, and the United States has such a big field to draw from.”
