UNIVERSITY V. SUNNYSIDE

to m xurroa ox TM. xaxas. i Sir, —Soreness at defeat or threat- j ened defeat has been one of the unfortunate features of certain' footballers during the season, and referees have -" , had to fake action. It appears, accord- , I ing to the letter, of Mr,L. J. Marshall, j 1 honorary secretary of Sunnyside Rugby, : - Football Club, the soreness is not con- ' fined to players. ’ Lookers-on will un- ' ] der stand this, and; will not be too • severe in their judgment of unwar- J ranted remarks by the. disappointed,; 1 Mr Marshall makes comments on .the . j game and the report of it which ap- i peared in your columns, which .he J would find it hard to justify; He says , < the report was “a masterpiece of Action,” yet fails to point out the Action; : - \ the report was inaccurate, he says, - yet fails to show in what respects it was so. Again, Mr Marshall says, “the reporter tries to. deride the the Sunnyside team.” This, if -you like, is purest Action. Once again the penalty try was “infamous.” Why was it infamous? Did Mr Marshall see the ~; play that led to it? If he did, then he does not know what he is - talking - - about. The University wing. Fountain, , had kicked the ball some distance over . the goal-line and was following up to, > recover and touch down, when . a was deliberately charged down by a Sunnyside player. It was a clear case , of illegal tackle. “Infamous.” Rubbish! ' If it were “infamous” why did not the club protest to the union against the • referee’s ruling? It might have given the club the game. I am sure your report of the game would be endorsed by nearly all who saw the game; and the Maroons have no need to entertain any feelings of disgust. ■ . ■ . Sunnyside played one of the cleanest, brightest, best games of the season, and the team deserves a whole heap of credit for the splendid showing It put up. It was football at its best.— Yours, etc.. _ H. R. WILKINSON. August 21, 1939.
