A BRILLIANT GATHERING

HUNT CLUB BALL MANY VISITORS TO TIMARU Timaru is very gay this week-end, as the Hunt Club festivities, always very popular, have attracted visitors from many districts. The Hunt Club’s ball, held last night in the Caroline Bay Hall, was a brilliant function. The hall had been decorated in true hunting style. Brush fences separated the lounge from the dancing floor, and bright yellow gorse outlined the stage. A large festooned dome of green and gold hung from the ceiling, while around the walls were gold horse-shoes and sporting prints. From the ballroom to the adjacent supper rooms a covered walk had been constructed, and this was effectively decorated with greenery and multi-coloured lights. The green topped supper tables looked attractive with large artificial water lilies, pink and yellow being used alternately. The committee responsible for the excellent arrangements comprised Mesdames C. L. Orbell, A. S. Elworthy, Harold Elworthy, M. C. Harper, Misses Patricia Ritchie, Doris Murphy, Annette Orbell, Messrs C. L. Orbell, M. C. Harper, D. Unwin, and L.. D. McKenzie. Mrs Orbell (wife of the Master of the hunt) wore a handsome gown of henna brocade, the pattern being outlined in silver. Tiny silver buttons and a cluster of henna and silver flowers .finished the bodice. Mrs A. S. Elworthy’s slightly trained frock was of oyster shaded brocade patterned in royal blue and cerise; with it she wore a posy of blue hyacinths at the waistline. Mrs Harold Elworthy wore a taffeta frock in an unusual shade of peacock blue, and Mrs Harper’s frock of fuchsia georgette was trained and finished with a spray of gold and fuchsia shaded flowers. Miss Patricia Ritchie wore a pink taffetafrock with shoulder spray of pink roses and blue forget-me-nots. Miss Doris Murphy’s wallflower brown taffeta frock had brown velvet shoulder straps and a spray of pink carnations, and Miss Annette Orbell wore a patterned taffeta frock with a blue velvet sash and a spray of blue hyacinths. There were three debutantes, and all wore white frocks for this important occasion.

Miss Angela Rhodes, .daughter of Mr and Mrs T. R. Rhodes, Hadlow Grange, Tycho, wore a frock of stiffened net, hailstone spotted with satin and cut on Empire lines. The heartshaped [neckline was outlined with a softly pleated frill of tulle, and the narrow shoulder straps were of diamente. The sash of tulle was tied with a large bow, and had very long wide tie-ends to form a slight train. She wore a silver rose in her hair and carried a bouquet of white and cream freesias. Miss Rachael Kain, daughter of Mr and Mrs Carlton Kain, Gladstone Park, Orari, wore a frock of ivory brocaded satjn, the pattern being outlined with silver. Narrow, pleated shoulder straps finished the close fitting bodice, and the fulhjess of the skirt was drawn to the back,- giving a slightly trained effect. Her posy was of spring flowers. Miss Miranda Turnbull, daughter of Mr and Mrs S. F. Turnbull, Rathmore street, Timaru, wore a frock of ivory lace mounted on satin, made on closefitting lines and falling into full flares from the hipline. The off-the-shoulder bodice had narrow satin shoulder straps clipped with diamante. She wore a coronet of silver sequins and long lace gloves. Her Victorian posy was of pink rosebuds.

Among the guests present were Mesdames E. C. Studholme, E. S. Johnstone.
