“PRESS SHIP” CAUTIONARY TALE
There was a boy whose name was Joe, , ... Who’d never look where he did go, Always %rtwsn. "bft /was in tufi street.
He’d be staring at his feet, Or gazing upward at the sky, - Whue motor-cars went whizzing by. When he went walking out one
day, The traffic rules he’d never obey, He didn’t walk on the crossing
white, ... But, not looking left or right. He sauntered over the busy street. As usual, gazing at his feet
A* motor-car came very near— The horn was tooted, but Joe
didn’t hear, . The man then applied the brake, But alas, it was too late. Poor Joe lay there very still.
Safety First !
All . thought that -he- was dead, •until—
A doctor came along and said, . . “I’ll take him to the hospital bed. And in there still be does he, With broken ,arm and fractured thigh. * . But he’s waiting for the tune to
come, > , , . lyhen down the street again he’ll ■ run. ■ ■ - ,
Poor Joe has had an awful fright, He’ll always look to left and right, And gaze no more down,at his feet. But walk on the lines when crossing the street f —BEVERLEY STOOP(aged 12), A. 8., L.8.H., P3JH- AP.S., Oamaru.
