MAORI CHURCH AT KOHUPATIKI
SUGGESTED MEMORIAL FOR CENTENNIAL (VBXBS ABSOOUTIOir TBIBOSAM.) HASTINGS, July 21. The erection of a Maori church at Kohupatiki, the home of Bishop P. A. Bennett, Bishop of Aotearoa, as a centennial memorial, has been suggested by the Maori people. About £SOO has been collected for building the church, but the work cannot be started without at least'£looo in hand. “Our Bishop is the only Maori Bishop in New Zealand, and the only one without a church of his own,” said a well-known Maori to-day. “We are very alnxious that one should be provided for him.” When Bishop Bennett returned from a recent -visit to India, he brought with him a marble corner-stone as a gift from Christian Indians. It is hoped that this would be used in building a new church. Several districts, it Is understood, have similar schemes in view.
