The Minister for Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) will leave for Dunedm by the first express to-day. Mr K J. Provan, of Australia, arrived at Wellington yesterday by the Awatea, en route tn Auckland where he will take up the posiof manager of the Bank of New South Wales. He is accompanied by Mrs Provan, who was formerly Miss G. M. Walker, of Christchurch. —Press Association.
The Rt. Rev. T. E. Riddell, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, has returned to Auckland after visiting the Thmaru, Nelson, Marlborough and Wellington Presbyteries. Lieutenant J. Green, recruiting officer for the Southern Military District, left for Wellington last evening. Mr A. B. Edwardes was a passenger for the north by the steamer express last evening. Resolutions of sympathy with relatives of Messrs F. G. Hobbs and F. Billingham, whose deaths occurred recently, were adopted at a meeting last evening of the council of the Automobile Association (Canterbury), Mr William Porter, supervisor at Auckland of the telegraph delivery service, retired yesterday after 40 years’ service with the Post and Telegraph Department. Mr Porter was stationed at Christchurch from 1926 to 1929. Mr James Crichton, of Takapuna, foreman cable jointer in the Post and Telegraph Department. retired yesterday after more than 20 years’ service in the department. Mr Crichton joined the staff in 1914. He served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force as a private and was awarded the Victoria Cross. He rejoined the department in 1919. Mr Harman Reeves, of Dunedin, chairman of the New Zealand Stock Exchange Association, and Mr H. Kitson, chairman of the Christchurch Stock Exchange, returned from the north by the steamer express yesterday morning.
Sir Charles Norwood, chairman of directors of Dominion Motors, Ltd., accompanied by Lady Norwood, will leave Wellington at the end of the week for Auckland to connect with the Mariposa for the United States of America, on his way to England. Mr John L. Robson, formerly Of Canterbury University College and Victoria University College, at present on, leave from the Public Trust Office, Christchurch, has been awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy of Law in the University of London.
Mr Frank Wynon Vickerman (Foxton) has been appointed a member of the Flax Plan Industrial Committee in place of Mr Samuel Harvey Maddren, who has resigned, according to a notice contained ,in the Gazette.— Press Association.
The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of ‘the New Zealand Sheepowners’ Federation:—President, Mr H. D. Acland (Christchurch); - vice-president, Mr Claude H. Williams (Gisborne); secretarytreasurer, Mr E. Hay (Canterbury).
