BASKETBALL NOTES

WELLINGTON TEAM SELECTED STRONG CHALLENGERS FOR N.Z. CUP (By “SHOOT.”) The 1939 senior Wellington representative team has been announced as follows: Forwards—T. Weybume, J. Willson, B. Catler, M. Jenkins. Centres—M. Howe, N. Metson, V. Stone, J. Crews. Defence—J. Williams, Jean Mitchell, Jan Mitchell* E. Graham. Wellington is holder, with Canterbury, of the New Zealand Cup, which ■will be competed lor this year at the interprovincial tournament, to be held at Invercargill during the week beginning August 21. The 1939 Wellington side is made up of excellent material and promises to be a very strong contender for the New Zealand Cup. The team retains five of last year’s players —namely T. Weyburne and M. Jenkins in the forward line, V. Stone and J. Crews in centre, and J. Williams in defence. In addition there are included three Wellington players who represented New Zealand in Australia last year. They are J. Willson, M. Howe, and Jean Mitchell. Notable absentees m the Wellington side this year are J. Grainger, who was the 1938 captain, E. Ruddell, M. Blake, and M. Wilson. The Auckland side remains the same as last year except for three replacements. Auckland fielded practically a new team last year and the players were at a disadvantage in having no experience of tournament games. The coming tournament, however, should see much better results from the Auckland side. The Canterbury senior selection will be announced next week.

West Coast Match The following team has been selected to represent the Canterbury third grade:— Forwards —E. Moore (Spreydon), M. Moore (Spreydon), M. McKeever (Monowai). Centres —T. Laurenson (Monowai), O. Jarden (Monowai), P. Storey (Digby’s). Defence —A. Bennett, captain (Corsair), N. Frazer (Corsair). D. Green (Monowai), and M. Simpson (Monowai). The selectors were Mrs W. J. McKenzie. Miss V. Flood, and Mr B. West. The team will play its first representative match on Saturday, July 22 against the West Coast, at Greymouth. Mrs McKenzie will travel with the team as manager. The second match will be that against the Wellington senior B representative team on August 12, at Wellington.

New Zealand Referees Mr F. Naughton, of Canterbury, has been appointed a New Zealand referee. Because of the adoption of new rules in the game this year, previous holders of New Zealand referees’ badges were forced to take another test in the practical examination: Mrs W. J. McKenzie, Mrs J. D. Cairney, and Mrs R. Lane, all of Canterbury, have qualified. Competition Matches St. Mary’s continues to lead the senior competition and Digby’s follows as runner-up. St. Mary’s easily disposed of the Students on Saturday by defeating them by 28 goals to 12. The Students played one short in the goalline. The game between Technical and Training College was evenly contested in the first half,'which ended with the scores at 11-10 in favour of Training College. In the second spell, however, Training College proved itself the better side and went quickly ahead to win by a comfortable margin of nine points. The final score was: Training College 32, Technical 23. In a mid-week match

Training College beat University by 29 goals to 22. Digby’s v. Sacred Heart In the Digby’s versus Sacred Heart game no outstanding play was noticeable. Perhaps, because of the extreme cold, balls were being dropped frequently so that the continuity of play was repeatedly being broken. By their unorthodox style the Sacred Heart players were successful in many movements. The court play of the forwards was good, but the shooting generally poor. There was a noticeable improvement in the Digby’s forward third, where N. Smith opened up the play considerably and finished off movements with accurate shooting. The scores, in favour of Digby’s in each instance, were 10-5 at half-time, and 22-12 at the end of the match. Beau Ideal Cup In the following figqres, the number of goals and points scored to date in the Beau Ideal Cup competition are indicated.
