SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Mr T. Wigley, Miss Patricia Wigley, and Miss Traill (Dunstan Downs) arrived yesterday to stay with Mrs A. Wigley (“Opuha Lodge,” Park lane) for the Hunt ball and races. Mr and Mrs B. H. Howell (“Matata,” Cave) will stay with Mrs -F. G. M. Raymond (Beverley road) for the ball and races.
Mr and Mrs'E. Edridge (Christchurch) will be the guests of Mrs H. Coxhead (Beverley road) for the Hunt ball and races. Mr and Mrs Alan Menzies (Banks Peninsula) will stay with Mrs J. A. Mullins (Hadlow) for the Hunt ball. Mr and Mrs W. E. Baird (Seddon street) are at the Hermitage, Mount Cook. Mr and Mrs Downes Roberts (Middlemarch) are staying with Mrs Simon Mackenzie, “Otumarama.” Mr and Mrs G. Hunter-Weston (Mount John, Lake Tekapo) will visit Timaru for the ball and races. Mrs P. C. Munro (Blenheim) is visiting Timaru. The first open evening of the Timaru branch of the New Zealand Society for English folk dancing was attended by more than 50 persons. The programme included the following dances: Rufty Tufty, Yorkshire Square Eight, Morpeth Rant; Mage on a Cree; Circassian Circle, Jenny Pluck Pears, Durham Reel. An enjoyable time was spent by the members and their friends, many of the visitors joining in the dances. Miss E. Lee and Mrs B. Elphick were presented’ with floral sprays, and Mrs Bell, pianist for the evening, was accorded three cheers.
WOMEN IN THE ROYAL AIR FORCE
The formation of a separate women’s service with the Royal Air Force in time of war has been officially announced in London. It will be called the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. Miss J. Trefusis Forbes, previously an officer in the Auxiliary Territorial Service, has been appointed to the Air Ministry as director of the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, with the rank of senior controller.
The personnel of the present Royal Air Force companies of the Auxiliary Territorial Service will be invited to enrol in the new force. companies, 48 in number, have been raised in 34 counties by the Territorial Army and Air Force Associations. The ordinary age-limits are 18 to 43, but applicants with war experience of special qualifications may be considered up to the age of 50.,
