NUFFIELD SCHOOL CHRISTENING CEREMONY PERFORMED* For many years a band of women in New Brighton cherished the hope of having a new building for a kindergarten, and undaunted by _ frequent discouragement, they continued to work'for their objective. They felt that it would take a very long time to collect sufficient money to erect the building. Then, quite unexpectedly, they received welcome help that brought about the early realisation of their hopes. Lord Nuffield visited Christchurch and gave a generous donation to the Mayor, then Mr J. W. Beanland, for distribution amongst deserving organisations. From this donation, Mr Beanland granted £6OO to the New Brighton Free Kindergarten Committee, and this sum, with a Government subsidy, enabled the committee to go forward with its plans. When the kindergarten was opened, there remained only a comparatively small deficit of about £2OO in the building fund. Sixty children are now attending the kindergarten, and there are 20 names on the waiting list—proof of the necessity for the school. After the official opening, Mrs H. A. Bishop, convener of the committee, wrote to Lord Nuffield expressing the committee’s gratitude for his generosity, enclosing two photographs of the school, and asking if he would grant permission for the kindergarten to be called after him. In reply, Lord Nuffield said he would be delighted if the school bore his name, but he stipulated that no title should precede the name.

Yesterday, in the presence of members of the local free kindergarten commitlee, and of the mothers’ committee, the christening ceremony was performed by the Mayoress of New Brighton, Mrs E. Smith, and the kindergarten will in future be known as the “Nuffield School.” A brass tablet bearing Lord Nuffield’s name will be placed in one of the classrooms, and the committee intends to write to its benefactor asking for a photograph of himself, to be hung in the school. After the ceremony yesterday, members of the combined committees were entertained at tea by - Mrs Bishop.
