HOPE OF COMPROMISE DENIED OFFICIAL STATEMENTS IN FREE CITY ANTI-POLISH PROPAGANDA CONTINUED (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.) (Received July 19, 2 p.m.) LONDON, July 18. No Polish compromise on Danzig and the Corridor has any chance of succeeding, declares the Danzig “Vorposten,” the editor of which accompanied the Nazi district leader (Herr Albert Forster) to Berchtesgaden. The paper adds: “In reply to rumours from Warsaw, we say that the Fiihrer’s generous proposals which Poland rejected will not be repeated. It must be clear that Poland’s impudent attitude is not calculated to establish a basis for negotiation.” An authoritative statement issued in Danzig declares that the Fuhrer’s address in the Reichstag on April 28 made the situation sufficiently clear, and that there was no reason to attempt a new interpretation. An official communique issued in Warsaw states lhat apart from the manner in which Germany may desire to incorporate Danzig within the Reich, Polish official quarters declare that incorporation would constitute an inadmissible violation of the present political and juridical state of affairs and evoke an appropriate response. This communique followed the suggestion that Herr Hitler was to be elected President of the Danzig Senate.

“No Relaxation in Tension” A spokesman at the Wilhelmstrasse emphatically contradicted the impression that there was a relaxation in the Danzig tension. He declared that nothing had happened to justify such a conclusion. The anti-Polish propaganda in the German press continues, declaring that Germany’s so-called change of attitude is merely the thinking of others. It is stated in Berlin that Britain s only opportunity of improving the position is to cease backing Poland. It is firmly denied in London that there had been any discussion on the possibilities of negotiations between Germany and Poland. Rumours of negotiations. between Britain and Germany are equally without foundation. Both London and Paris are satisfied with Poland’s attitude. . Poland insists that any gesture to discuss the position must come from Germany. The newspapers continue to emphasise that the visit of General Sir Edmund Ironside aims at preparing a force capable of victoriously resisting any aggression. Danzig is quiet, although an increasing number of Nazi youths are entering. ' . The Gestapo has arrested at least 60 members of the' Danzig police.
