ADDINGTON MARKET

♦ FAT SHEEP VALUES EASIER PRIME CATTLE SELL WELL Weather conditions at Addington yards yesterday were very unpleasant. A cold wind prevailed most of the day, but the rain, fortunately, held oil in the afternoon. The attendance of farmers was smaller than usual. With a larger entry of fat sheep, the sequence of weekly advances in price was interrupted, values generally easing by 2s a head on the advance of last week, with lighter ewes down by up to 2s 6d. Some exceptionally good truck lots were forward from South Canterbury and South Otago. Fat cattle opened at easier values, but firmed to last week’s rates when the sale was about a third of the way through. A small penning in the store sheep pens maintained the brighter markets of the last few weeks, attractive pens of ewe lambs and two-tooth ewes making firmer prices than for some time. Porkers sold at an advance, but there was little change in other sections of the market. STORE SHEEP There was a better selection of sheep in the store sheep pens, and considering the day and the appearance of the sheep, and also the small attendance of farmers, the sale was a good one. There was a steady demand for all classes. A truck lot of well-conditioned three-quarterbred ewe hoggets realised 17s, with other pens at 12s. and poor conditioned down to 7s Bd. Few wethers were penned, but the best of these—a truck lot in fairly forward condition—made 13s 9d. A pen of 94 four and six-tooth halfbred ewes sold at 21s, and other pens of four, six, and eight-tooth halfbreds at 20s 7d and 18s 6d, with others down to 12s. Several pens of sound-mouthed ewes sold at from 8s to 10s 4d. Representative sales were:— Hoggets—Sixty-three at Us. 102 at 12s, 69 at 17s, 85 at 9s lid, 77 at 7s Bd. 165 at 9s sd, 20 at 8s 4d, 35 at 12s 4d, 40 at 10s. Wethers—Eighty-two at 11s Id, 12 at 8s 9d, 66 at 10s 3d, 27 at 13s 9d, 76 at 13s 6d. 62 at 12s sd. Ewes—Sixty-eight at 11s Id, 12 at 5s Bd, 17 at 3s 6d, 73 at 16s 3d, 21 at 12s 6d. 66 at 18s 6d, 75 at 12s Id, 73 at 10s 4d, 37 at 20s 7d 50 at Bs, 48 at 12s, 94 at 21s. 39 at 17s. 148 at 14s 3d.

FAT LAMBS A small penning of 115 head was offered in the lamb pens, but only a few pens of decently finished .were included. These sold at up to 8d per lb, but the other sorts sold at values which have been ruling lately. Top price was 29s lOd. Dalgety and Company, Ltd., sold:—On account of J. Ballagh (Hororata). 17 at 13s 4d to 14s 7d; John Deans (Coalgate). 6 at 12s Id. FAT SHEEP The succession of rising markets for fat sheep was arrested to-day, when there was a larger entry. The total penning was about 5000 head, compared with 4000 last week. There were a few truck lots from South Canterbury and South Otago, and quality on an average was good. The sale, though very irregular, was easier from the outset, and on an average values were down on those of last week by about 2s a head. This decline applied to most classes. Medium and lighter ewes'showed a slightly bigger drop than this in the later stages of the sale. The general quality of this section, however, was not so attractive as that at last week’s sale, and with the larger entry butchers had a better opportunity of selection. Prime ewes, on the other hand, eased less than the average of 2s a head. A line of outstanding wethers from W. Atkinson (Ohoka) sold at from 36s 7d to 39s 4d, with five at the top price. A truck lot of 53 ewes from J. Chapman (Pleasant Point) sold at an average of 27s 6d, and another truck lot of 51 from Eastern Southland at 275. Values were as follows: Extra prime heavy wethers, to 39s 4d. Prime heavy wethers, 29s 6d to 345. Prime medium-weight wethers, 25s to 28s. Ordinary wethers. 20s to 245. Light wethers, to 19s. Extra prime heavy ewes, to 30s 7d. Prime heavy ewes. 22s 6d to 265. Prime medium-weight ewes, 18s to 225. Ordinary ewes, 14s 6d to 17s. Light ewes, to 14s. There was a good showing of quality steers, the standard in this respect being quite up to the level of recent sales. Several truck lots of exceptionally good cattle came from southern provinces, and there were prime truck lots from local fattening districts, the Peninsula, and the West Coast. The market opened at from 10s to 20s a head lower than the improved rates of a week ago, but after the first two to three races there was a firming and values until the conclusion of the market were up to the best of last week’s prices. The best cattle ranged just on 40s per 1001 b. The best cattle made from £l6 to £l7, with tops to £lB 12s 6d. A truck lot of eight from W. Jamieson (Koiterangi) averaged £l6 3s 9d. A surprising feature of the market the. last few weeks is the keenness of the demand for lightly fleshed cows round about £5 10s to £6 10s. Values were as under:— Extra prime, heavy steers to £lB 12s 6d. Prime heavy steers, £ls to £l6 ss. Prime medium-weight steers, £l3 5s to £l4 15s. Ordinary steers, £lO 5s to £l2 15s. There was a shortage of good runners, and these met with a free sale. Generally, however, there was a firm sale at last week’s rates for all classes, with a shade of improvement for small calves. A line of 15 runners from the West Coast averaged £5 Is. Values were as under:— Best runners, to £7 6s. Good runners. £3 12s Gd to £4 16s. Extra good vealers, £4 10s to £5 2s Gd. Good vealers, 38s to 455. Large calves, 27s Gd to 40s. Small calves, 8s to 31s Gd. STORE CATTLE There was not a single line of young cattle in the store section, the pens being lightly filled with odd cows and a bull or two. Little Interest was taken in the market and the few sales made were at recent levels. DAIRY CATTLE There was another good-sized yarding of dairy cattle, and a few outstanding sorts were included. For these, and also for other better types at the drop, there was a keen demand. A Friesian cow sold at £l9, and a Friesian heifer at £l7. There was no change in the market for secondary sorts and average spring calvers. which sold slowly. Medium cows near calving sold at from £9 to £lO 10s. and backward springers from £4 10s to £6. FAT PIGS The entry in the porker section was the smallest of the season, and as a result prices from the outset showed a sharp rise of from 3s to 4s a head. These values Were maintained throughout the sale. Had it not been for a few late arrivals butchers’ requirements would not have been fulfilled. Choppers were in small supply and showed an advance in price of 10s to 15s a head. Baconers were again forward in small numbers and recovered the drop of last week. Values wei-e:— Light porkers, 43s Gd to 48s Gd. Medium porkers, 49s Gd to 55s Gd. Heavy porkers, 55s Gd to £3 2s Gd. Average price per lb. 7d to 7id. Light baconers, 57s Gd to £3 9s Gd. Average price per lb, 6Jd to 7d. : STORE PIGS The entry in the store pig section was small, and quite a satisfactory sale resulted. Although the bidding was by no means spirited, any pens of good-condi-tloned pigs sold exceptionally well, except large stores, the demand for which was not as good as last week. Values for these were down by about 2s a head. Only, four pens of weaners .wore offered, and' these sold out of all comparison with other classes, making up to 17s 6d. Values vfererar Weepers. 14s to 17s Gd. sups, ’l7s tq 195. Small stores, sgs to 235. Medium stores. 24s Gd' tp 27s Bd. Large stores, to 31S. ’ STUDHOLME There were only a few pens of fat and store sheep forward at the Studholme sale. Owing to the bad weather the attendance was poor. However, prices for store sheep

were firmer by about Is a head, and fat sheep were firm ■at late rates. Failingmouth ewes in lamb made 11s to 13s, sound-mouth three-quarterbred ewes 14s 6d, aged ewes 6s 3d, prime ewes to 17s 7d, medium 13s to 15s. BURNSIDE (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) .
