WEDNESDAY (Before Mr H. A. Young, S.M.) IDLE AND DISORDERLY Lawrence Norman Humphreys pleaded guilty to a charge of being idle and disorderly in that he had insufficient lawful visible means of support. He was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour. DRUNKENNESS John English, on a charge of being drunk in Hereford street, was fined 20s and ordered to pay costs. He had been once previously convicted within the last six months. TRAFFIC OFFENCES Offenders against traffic regulations, prosecuted by Inspector F. Blewitt for the New Brighton Borough Council, were fined as follows: Driving motor-vehicle without licence: Desmond West. ss; Thomas Owen Hughes, ss; Cecil V. Austin, 5s (no warrant fitness ss, failing to keep to left ss); Eldred R. Clark, os. Riding bicycle on footpath: Geoffrey Davidson, 10s; George Rowland, 10s; Robert Francis Lochdre, 10s. CHARGE ADJOURNED George Reginald Goodwin pleaded not guilty to a charge of occupying premises in Osborne terrace, _ New Brighton, as a dwelling-house, without having a permit to use them for that purpose. The prosecution was brought by Inspector F. Blewitt for the New Brighton Borough Council. The charge was adjourned for a week. The defendant said he had plans for a building before the council at the moment. He could not get a house elsewhere in the meantime, and had to occupy the Remises as they were at present to provide a home for his family. » For driving a horse-drawn vehicle across a footway and damaging the surface Goodwin was fined £2 and ordered to pay costs. SCALES NOT STAMPED Henry George Purdue, a fruit and produce vendor, pleaded guilty to a' charge of using in trading a scale not stamped as the regulations required. Mr S. E. McGregor, for the department, said that Purdue had a travelling business as well as his shop. On his vehicle he had the offending scales. They were dilapidated and weighed to a certain extent against the customer. The defendant said he sold from the vehicle mainly fruit that did not require to be weighed. When he did use the scales it was only for approximate weight, and he gave an advantage to the customer often. His old scales had been confiscated. He admitted that they were in need of replacement. It had cost him £4 to buy more. Purdue was fined 10s and ordered to pay costs. PAYMENT OF OVERTIME Henry Hampton, photographer, of Cambridge terrace, pleaded guilty to a charge of employing a worker. Miss G. Tallon, during extended hours and failing to pay her overtime. Mr McGregor said that the defendant was now paying the overtime due. Mr S. R. Dacre, who appeared for the defendant, said that evening weddings and general pressure of business led to the overtime. The defendant had approached the department in the matter and since had been given' a permit for extended hours. The Magistrate: But he’ll have to pay overtime for the extended hours. Mr Dacre: Yes. Hampton was fined 20s and ordered to pay costs. .
