OFFICIAL FORECASTS [THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, July 19. The weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough issued at 5 p.m. by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows: — Moderate and variable winds, southerly to easterly predominating. Weather changeable, with farther showers, but improving from the south. Cold temperatures. Seas rough north of Kaikoura, otherwise moderate. WEST COAST The forecast for the West Coast of the South Island is;— Light to moderate easterly to southerly winds. Weather partly cloudy and cold. Seas slight to moderate. DOMINION The forecast for the Dominion is:— Weather changeable and showery in eastern districts from Otago to Hawke’s Bay, but improving from the south. Elsewhere fair to fine at first, but unsettled conditions advancing from the north-west over the northern half of the North Island. Cold night and slightly milder> day temperatures. A weak anti-cyclone extends from the south Tasman Sea on to southern New Zealand, while a shallow depression is located west of the Auckland Peninsula. Winds: Between south-west and south-east predominating, fresh in exposed positions on the coast, from Banks Peninsula to East Cape, otherwise light to moderate. Seas (New Zealand waters): Rather rough at times south of East Cape and in Cook Strait. Slight to moderate elsewhere. Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate and variable winds, easterly predominating at first, but a change to south-westerly advancing across the northern portion. Seas moderate.CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER The weather in Christchurch yesterday was cold, with occassional showers of rain and sleet. Southwesterly wipds prevailed. The maximum temperature was 41.2 degrees. At 1 o’clock this morning the sky was clearing and there was a light south-westerly wind. The temperature was 37 degrees and the barometer was steady at 29.97 inches. ■ Meteorological observations taken at the Magnetic Observatory, Christchurch, on July 19: — 9 a.m. 3 p.m.

IN OTHER PLACES v Auckland—After frost yesterday morning conditions were clear and sunny, with a light to moderate southerly wind. The maximum temperature was 51 degrees. The barometer was steady with the reading at 5 p.m. 29.68 inches (1005 millibars). Wellington—Yesterday was very cold with intermittent rain and a moderate southerly breeze. The maximum temperature was 42.7 degrees. At 3 p.ni. the temperature was 42.7 degrees, and the barometer at 1005.9 millibars. Dunedin —There was misty rain yesterday morning, with no wind, but the weather improved later, although there was no break in the sky, and temperatures were mild, the maximum being 50 degrees.
