MONDAY (Before Mr H. A. Young, S.M.) INTOXICATED MOTORIST Cyril Butters (Mr C. S. Thomas), aged 43, a paymaster in the Public Works Department, of Rangiora, pleaded guilty to a charge of being intoxicated in charge of a car in Victoria street on June 10. Sub-Inspector W. E. Packer said that a traffic inspector followed the defendant’s car on Saturday and asked him to stop. The defendant stopped on the tram rails and when he was asked to pull over to the left he moved his car further to the right. He was taken to the police station, where a doctor found him to be intoxicated. M*- Thomas said that Butters had had a number of whiskies with friends on Saturday. When he went to his car He did not feel well enough to drive it, so he sat there for more than an hour until he did. He had held a licence for more than 20 years, and had no previous offence of any kind. His was by no means a bad case. Mr Thomas called evidence from the Mayor of Rangiora (Mr C. W. Tyler), who said he had known Butters for more than 30 years, and that Butters was a respected citizen of Rangiora. It was a surprise to him. to find the defendant charged with this offence. The Magistrate said he would take into account the defendant’s good record, and other circumstances mentioned by Mr Thomas. Butters was fined £lO and ordered to pay costs. His licence was cancelled and he was prohibited from obtaining another for two years. SUMNER MOTORIST FINED Francis Syar Smith Richardson, aged 27. a baker, of Sumner (Mr W. R. Lascelles). pleaded guilty to a charge of being intoxicated in charge of a car in Manchester street on June 10. Sub-Inspector Packer said that two traffic inspectors saw the defendant start his car near the railway station. When they called on him to stop a few moments later, he seemed to lose all sense of direction and went straight for a post. He pulled up without striking it. When he was taken to the police station the doctor found him to be intoxicated. Mr Lascelles said that Richardson had a few drinks with friends after going to a football match. His was. not really a bad case. Richardson was fined £2O and ordered to pay costs. His licence was cancelled and he was prohibited from obtaining another for two years. On a charge of damaging a cell utensil at the police station. Richardson was convicted and ordered to pay costs. LICE-INFECTED SHEEP Robert Nixon Moore (Mr W. F. Tracy) was fined 10s and ordered to pay costs on a charge of exposing for sale lice-infected stock, MAINTENANCE CASES (Before Mr F. F. Reid, S.M.) DISOBEDIENCE OF ORDERS For disobedience of maintenance orders, offenders were dealt with as follows: — Douglas Churchcr Davidson was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, issue of the warrant to be suspended provided arrears are paid at the rate of 10s a week in addition to current maintenance. Francis Herbert Denis Fitzgerald was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, warrant to be suspended as long as he pays 2s 6d off arrears. Ernest Edward Harper was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, warrant to be suspended as long as arrears are paid at 2s 6d a week. Lawrence Edwin Hollaway was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment, warrant to be suspended as long as arrears are paid at Is 6d a week. NEW ORDERS MADE New orders for maintenance were made in favour of married women against their husbands as follows; Thomas Frederick Hammond, 27s 6d a week; Arnold Cecil Hart, 15s a week; Henry Albert Nickolls, £2 a week; Harold B. Webby, £1 10s a week (for wife and child). Keith Nichols Jones was ordered to pay 10s a week for the maintenance of his mother; Neil Albert Jones, 5s a week: Desmond Jones, 5s a week; and Tui George 12s 6d a week.
