down round the spool that holds up the load, then passes up and round two different spools and finally ends at a weight. The weight does not need to be made of a single piece of iron, as the picture shows. In fact, nails may be used, and if some of the nails rub on the wall so much the better. To show how the lowest spool is connected to the hook that holds the load, a separate sketch has been

made. The hook may be made of any soft wire that is strong enough to hold up the load. * I have fastened my crane between a large box and a tree and have * sand pile between, and can pull tw strings so as to,make the load o* sand go backward and forward up and down—just where I want» to go.
