BRITAIN AND THE SOVIET
* Reply Delivered To Proposals OPINION IN FAVOUR OF ALLIANCE (TJNITEft PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.) (Received May 8, 2 p.m.) LONDON, May 7. “The Times” states that Britain’s e ply to the Soviet proposals has been sent. The “News-Chronicle” and the “Daily Herald” agree that a British and Russian alliance is essential to deter Herr Hitler. The “Daily Herald” guardedly voices the belief that Mr Chamberlain has rejected the Russian plan for it in favour of a unilateral Russian guarantee to Eastern European States, and insists that he. promptly clarify the situation. The “News-Chronicle” also suspects British diplomacy of halting, in spite of the urgency for a peace alliance created by the GermanItalian agreement, and it foresees the danger of a deadlock in the British and Russian negotiations. The “Daily Mail” and the “Daily Telegraph” consider that the Ger-man,-Italian Pact does not change the situation. “The Times” agrees that the Ger-man-Italian Pact does not alter the situation, and it cites current diplomatic gossip, which indicates the possibility of Italy genuinely desiring a peaceful settlement, and influencing Germany in that direction. The Warsaw correspondent of the “Daily Express” says M. Stalin began a new anti-Nazi radio campaign. An announcer appealed to German workers to go slow to hinder the Fascist war plans, and to fight for their rights within the scope of the few legal means remaining to them. It is understood that 20 Soviet stations will carry on nightly broadcasts in German. Meanwhile the Soviet has ceased broadcast attacks on Poland and now applauds her “gallant” stand against aggression.
