* — ; The Minister for Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan), who arrived in Christchurch by air from Wellington on Sunday, left the city again by the steamer express last evening on his return to the North Island. He was accompanied by his private secretary, Mr K. Sleight. Mr S. G. Holland, M.P., was a passenger to Wellington on the steamer express last night. Sergeant S. King, of the Central Police Station, Christchurch, has received notice of his transfer to Invercargill, and will leave shortly to take up his new duties. The death of two prominent citizens—Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., and Dr. H. T. J. Thacker—was mentioned at the meeting of the Christchurch City Council last evening. The usual motions of regret were carried, members of the council standing. As well as serving as a member of Parliament for many years, Mr Howard was on the council for two periods. His daughter, Miss Mabel Howard, is a member of the present council. Dr. Thacker was Mayor of the city from 1919 to 1923 and also served as a councillor. Previously he had been a member of Parliament. Mr H. C. C. Jones, 8.E., of the Public Works Department at Rangiora, has been appointed structural engineering assistant on the staff of the Christchurch City Council’s engineering department. Mr R.. A. Barnsdale, Christchurch manager of the National Bank of New Zealand, who has been on a business visit to the North Island, has returned to Christchurch. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., who was patron of the Barrington Croquet Club, was passed at the club’s annual meeting recently. Dr. Mark Brown left yesterday morning for Dunedin, where he will conduct the final examinations at the Otago Medical School. Mr C. Miln, a new member of the executive of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association, was welcomed by the president (Mr A. E. Haynes) at last evening’s meeting. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Dr. H. T. J. Thacker was passed by the executive of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association at its meeting last evening. Dr. Thacker had been an honorary member of the association almost since its inception.
