' •- " ■ FIRST VISIT OF SHIP TO LYTTELTON For the first time in her short history as an intercolonial trader the new motor-vessel, Matthew Flinders, owned by the H.C.S. Coasters Proprietary, Ltd., is visiting Lyttelton. Although the new ship was launched at Burntisland on September 9 of last year, this is the first time that she has visited the east coast *)f the South Island. She was designed to carry mammoth baulks of timber and to replace the Abel Tasman, which was wrecked on the Greymouth bar in June, 1936. The length of the Matthew Flinders is 284 feet and her gross tonnage is 2225. The vessel is of the threeisland type with a grain capacity of 179,460 cubic feet and a bale capacity of approximately 164,000 cubic feet. The cargo handling arrangements include eight steel derricks, each capable of dealing with loads of 10 tons. The propelling machinery consists of tripleexpansion super-heated steam engines. The master of the Matthew Flinders is Captain W. L. Archibald.
