ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY

“VERY GRAVE FINANCIAL POSITION” EFFORT TO BE MADE TO CLEAR DEFICIT Attention to the “very graye” financial position of the Christchurch Orchestral Society was drawn in the report presented to the annual meeting recently, and considerable discussion took place on the society’s finances. The meeting agreed that a sub-com-mittee, consisting of the president (Mr H. E. Jarman), the secretary .(Mr A. E. Willyams). and Messrs W. Hay, L. J. Taylor, and C. H. Smith, should consider ways and means to clear the deficit. A women’s auxiliary was also formed to assist with the finances of the society. The portion of the report dealing with the financial position said: “After being able to report on the work of the society in such glowing terms, it is with extreme regret that the same cannot be reported about our financial position, which can only be characterised as very grave. It is quite apparent that our main sources of revenue have dwindled to such an extent that they do not meet the current year’s commitments. That is, unpaid accounts total £23 9s and actual cash in hand is £5 10s Bd. leaving a debit of £l7 18s 2d. Unfortunately, this does not give the complete position as your committee was unable to grant the usual honorarium to the conductor.” It was also decided that public concerts be discontinued: that endeavours be made to hold together the players and subscribers and to give private concerts: that the services of the society be made available for public charity concerts sponsored by others; that an annual membership fee be payable by all players. The following officers were elected; Patron, Dr. James Hight; president. Mr H E. Jarman; vice-presidents, the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane), Mrs J. H. Jarman. Messrs F. C. Raphael, H. H. Loughlin, Alfred J. Bunz, L. J. Taylor. J. N. Ormerod, R. A. Horne, A. Lawrence, A. L. Cropp, T. W. Dent, C. H. Smith. R. C. Stone. W. Hutchens; committee. Messrs H. W. E. Crowe, D. Gower. W. Hav, F. H. Cookson, _R. Simon, W. K. Hutchens. C. H. Smith, L. S. Bunz; conductor, Mr Alfred J. Bunz; orchestra leader. Mr T. B. Riordan; honorary auditors. Messrs H._ R. Best and Company: honorary librarian, Mr H. W. Perryman:-honorary secretary and treasurer. Mr A. E. Willyams.
