UNION OF CHURCHES
TO TH* XOtTOB Of TH* PRESS Sir,— Truth is truth qt all times, and heresy becomes no less heretical because this happens to be the holy season Of Easter. Accordingly, while your correspondent “They Know Not What They Do” is undoubtedly actuated by the best of motives, his—or her—senti ments are unsound, since the deplorable fact that many deny the authority of Christ and of His Church, render it necessary, in all seasons, to defend Catholic truth against the attacks of heresy. While the dissension existing among Christiaps is lamentable, and while it is the earnest prayer of all true Christians that mankind will become united one fold under one shepherd, it nevertheless emerges that dissension JjfUl continue while a considerable section persists in its denial of truth, olncc, however, it is opposition to truth. a n<J not truth itself, which is responsible, it is unreasonable to request that ‘hose who have the responsibility of propagating truth should remain silent because their teachings are likely to etc te hostility of heresy.—Yours, H. J, EGAN April 4. 1939-
id m bditoe or tee p»ns Sir, —In a letter from the Rev. Frank Seward in your issue of to-day, he says that our Lord “instituted the Papacy/’ I wonder whether the writer really believes this, or whether he is merely voicing a tenet of the Roman teaching: a tenet, by the way, which is the principal plank upon which Rome stands’ However, unfortunately for the Rev. Frank Seward’s statement, history does not support him. The New Testament us that our Lord instituted the Apostolate; and the Apostles when the need arose, the -three Orders of Miristry—deacons, priests, and bishops; but the New Testament tells us nothing of a Pope. In fact, the term “Pope” was not applied to the Bishop of Rome, or to any other bishop, until centuries after the dates of the Gospels or the It savours of blasphemy to say that our Lord instituted the Papacy.—Yours, etc, „ T . , A. S. MOFFATT. Hinds, April 3, 1939.
