THE STOCK EXCHANGES

MARKETS GENERALLY FIRM MODERATE LOCAL TURNOVER Markets generally were firm on call yesterday and there was a moderate turnover in a few stocks. New Zealand Government 3J- per cent, stock, due 1953-57, remained unaltered at £9l 10s, market closing £9l 5s buyers, £ 91 10s sellers.' Commercial Bank of Australia were firm, with buyers and dealings at 16s, sellers at 16s Id. Buyers of National Bank of New Zealand raised their bids to 46s 9d, and sellers were firm at 475. South British Insurance were firmer on buyers’ offers 44s 3d.

Metropolitan Building changed hands at £ll,

Goldsbrough, Morts were firm with sellers and business at 295, buyers at 28s lOd.

Kaiapoi Woollen preference were steady at 14s 9d. New Zealand Breweries were fractionally firmer at 37s iOd. Buyers of Tooths Brewery moved up to 555.

Buyers of Australian Consolidated Industries raised their bids to 33s Id, sellers at 365. British Tobacco were fractionally firmer with buyers and business at 49s 6d. "Broken Hill Proprietary were firmer on buyers’ offers, 58s 6d.

Buyers' offers for Donaghys, Dunlops. Zincs, Herald and Weekly, 1.C.1. preference, Newspapers and Wilsons, revealed firmer markets. Q. J. Coles were stronger ydth .buyers and business at 78s 6d. sellers at 80s. > Buyers of Woolworths moved un to 23a Id, but sellers were reticent.

Mount Lyells were firmer with buyers at 26s lOd. Grey River were a shade easier at 18s 3Jd, market closing id either way. Buyers of Arahura raised their bids to 27s 6d without attracting sellers. LISTED STOCKS
