RAILWAY STATION GARDENS
♦ RESULT OF COMPETITION The annual competition for railway station gardens in the Canterbury district was won by Rakaia and Heathcote together. Results were announced yesterday by the District Traffic Manager, Mr W. v Rakaia and Heathcote, with 166 points each, were awarded first place in class A of the competition. In class B, Little River (157 points) was placed first and Waikari (153 points) second, while in class C, Kaiapoi (150 points) and Leeston (144 points) gained the honours. . .
The judging committee, comprising four members of the Christchurch Horticultural Society—Messrs. H. L.. Darton, A. H. Shanks, H. H. Gardiner, and L. T. K. Allison—made two inspections of the stations. The first was made at the beginning of February and the second at the end of March. Altogether 14 stations were visited, and the judges expressed their admiration of the work being done in all cases. Mr Rodgers said that the Railways Department greatly appreciated the interest taken in the gardens by. the judging committee, the present members of which have acted during the last' seven years.
