Mrs W. Willes (Warwick House), who has been visiting the North Island, returned to Christchurch yesterday. Mrs Noel Buchanan (Nelson) is visiting Christchurch and is staying at Warwick House. Later she will visit Mrs George Dennistoun, Peel Forest. Mr and Mrs Keith Manning (Kuala Lumpur) arrived in Christchurch yesterday to visit Mr Manning’s parents, Dr. and Mrs L. S. Manning, Garden road, Fendalton. Mrs P. Stanley Foster (“Woodford,” Papanui road) has returned from a holiday spent in the Marlborough Sounds. Mr and Mrs McLeod (England) and Mr and Mrs David McLeod (Grasmere, Cass) left yesterday for a visit to Picton. Mr and Mrs J. Redpath (Fendalton) returned yesterday from a visit to Wellington. Mr Walter Norwood, general manager of Dominion Motors, Ltd., accompanied by Mrs Norwood, left by the Awatea this week on a business trip to Sydney. Mr and Mrs E. N. Ussher (Sumner, Christchurch), who have been visiting Gore for the christening of their twin grandsons, left yesterday for Dunedin, where they will spend a few days with Mr and Mrs Hill, Elm row. Mrs D. Steven and Mrs Hunt (Stratford) are spending a short holiday in Christchurch. Miss Denise Monteath, who has been spending some months in Sydney, has returned to Christchurch to visit Mr and Mrs J. Monteath, Fendalton. Miss Elaine Wickenden, who has been the guest of Mrs J. Jackson, Jackson’s Bay, South Westland, for the last two months, returned to Christchurch on Monday. Mr and Mrs Isaac Stevenson (Marlborough street, Christchurch), who have been spending a few days in Sydney, will leave by the Orion for England to-day. News has been received of the success in London of two Christchurch girls. Miss Pattee Cameron Smith, who, with her mother and sisters, left some time ago for England, has gained her secretarial diploma at Mrs Hostess’s Secretarial Training College, London, and Miss Nora Cameron Smith has gained her diploma and has won the college shield at St. James’s secretarial college. Their sister, Miss Bobbee Cameron Smith, is making good progress at the Chelsea School of Art. Mrs P. Battola, Poerua, West Coast, has returned from a holiday with tier parents, Mr and Mrs W. M. Caven, Bealey avenue, Christchurch. Mr and Mrs Thomas Davidson, Palmerston North, are on a holiday visit,'and are,the guests/of Mr and Mri W/’ M. ,Caven, Bealey avenue. Thbywill tour the South Island before Australia. Miss Ethel Overton (Hereford street west) will leave Christchurch on April 4 for Wellington, where she will join the Rangitata on April 6 for a trip to Britain. Miss Joan Grimes (St. Albans), who is spending a holiday in Wellington, will leave at the end Of the week for a visit to Auckland and Hamilton. Miss. Gladys Connolly (Timaru) and Miss Mabel McDowell (Ashburton) will return home to-day after spending a holiday at Greymouth. Mrs H. F. Herbert (Bradnor street, Fendalton) left last night for a visit to Wellington. Miss Annette Kellerman, the wellknown swimmer, who arrived in Sydney last week by the Mooltan, said that Australia was a long way behind other countries in physical education. SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION AT LEESTON

For the annual ball of St. John’s branch of the Hibernian Society, there was a large and representative attendance at the Leeston Town Hall. The guests, wno included representatives from the various friendly societies in the Ellesmere district and from other branches of the Hibernian Society, were welcomed by the president of St. John’s branch (Mr L. McCloy), and the secretary of the ball committee (Mr J. A. Creagh). Dance music was supplied by Mr Colin Campbell’s orchestra, and Messrs L. McCloy and E. J. Slattery were the masters of ceremonies. Miss M. Duncan presided at the fortnightly meeting of the .Business and Professional Women's Round Table Club of the Young Women’s Christian Association, held in the association’s clubroom. The speaker for the evening, Mrs B. C. Penney, spoke of the present day positions of the world Powers. GUILD AFTERNOON AT DUNSANDEL Members of St. Thomas’s Guild met at the residence of Mrs C. A. Wright, Dunsandel, to say farewell to one of the members. Miss Helen Chappell, who is shortly leaving the district to be married., The Rev. G. L..Harold expressed the good wishes of those present to Miss Chappell. Competitions were won by Mrs Harold, Miss H. Chappell, and Mr Harold.

While in England, she took degrees in medical gymnastics, medical electricity, and light and electro-therapy.
