LABOUR DEPARTMENT DISMISSALS

AUCKLAND SITUATION (PXKfta ASSOCIATION TZLIOXAM.) AUCKLAND, March 21. Temporary clerks employed in the Auckland employment division of the Labour Department, portion of which has been absorbed in the new Social Security Department, now face the certainty that substantial retrenchment is contemplated among them. Until they joined the division from the ranks of the unemployed some of the temporary clerks had no previous clerical experience; but there are others with long training who have held responsible positions. There are large numbers of unemployed clerks on the labour market in Auckland

MR SAVAGE’S COMMENT Crmxss association tnlnoaam.) WELLINGTON, March 21. “This is one of the things we will deal with,” said the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage), commenting on the report of dismissals from the Employment Division of the Labour Department. “We do not want men working for the sake of working when there is nothing for them to do. If they are not needed, we will have to make provision for them somewhere else.”
