CHILLED BEEF EXPORTS

“DEVELOPMENT NEEDED IN CANTERBURY” AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION MEETS “1 am of opinion that the day is not far distant when we shall need to develop the export of chilled beef from Canterbury, and this can only be done if suitable types of young cattle are available.” said the chairman (Mr T. A. Stephens) in his address to the annual meeting of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, last evening. Mr Stephens had commented on the success of the fat stock show which was held at the Addington Saleyards during the August double market. He was confident that the association could look forward to the further development of this venture. The association’s finances continued to show a steady improvement, said Mr Stephens. After allowing £1219 7s 8d lor depreciation the association was able to show a credit balance of £479 Os Bd. “The 1938 Metropolitan Show was one of the most successful in the tory of the association.” he said. “The attendance of 60,000 was a record. Fine weather on the second day of the show was to some extent responsible for this, but the large entry of all classes of stock, the quality of the exhibits, and the enthusiasm of the committee and the officers of the association had a lot to do with what was in every way an outstanding success. The committee is always trying to improve the show in every way and will be glad at any time to receive suggestions which may be of use to promote its interests. “The 1033 ram fair showed a substantial increase in the number of sheep entered. There was a record total of 6180. In spite of this, however, a good sale resulted for all except the poorer class of rams. This year the entry is considerably less “I consider that the ram fair is too late in the season. Thousands of rams have been sold privately, many ot which would be at the fair if it was held earlier. I think too, that it would be worth while to explore the possibility of having a stud ram fair, say in the puddle of February. I believe that is the custom in several places in the North Island, and I see no reason why it should not be a success here. “I think that the time has now arrived when we should reconside our attitude towards the embargo on the direct importation of stud stock from England. Direct importation has been in vogue in Australia for many years, with so far as I can see no risk of disease whatever. No case of foot-and-mouth disease has occurred either in the London quarantine station or in any country to vrtvtctv stock, has been exported from the station. Representation of Women,

“On our committee we have representatives for nearly every section of the show. We have members keenly interested in horses, light and heavy, the different breeds of cattle and sheep. But there are sections of the show ih which ladies are more directly interested. I think that these sections should be encouraged and that the assistance of ladies, should be sought either as members of the committee or as co-opted members of sub-com-mittees. I am sure that their presence would make for the better working of those sections. I think that the outstanding success of the light horse section is largely due to the enthusiasm shown by the ladies, and I would be in favour of asking them to assist with the management of that section.” Mr Stephens concluded by thanking the committee, the secretary (Mr M. E. Lyons), and the staff for their services to the association during the year. „ Election of Officers
