DOMINIONS IN WAR

ANXIETY ABOUT DEFENCES COMMENT BY LORD STRABOLGI REFERENCE TO SPEECH BY MR CHAMBERLAIN (dxitbo PRF.sa AasociATioa—corruoti.) (Received March 16, 9 p.m.)

LONDON, March 16,

Referring to his visit to New Zealasd and Australia, Lord Strabolgi in the House of Lords, said that he found that a deplorable effect had been produced by a speech made by Mr Chamberlain last year in which he said that-the Government’s tasks in defence were the Home territory, trade routes, and any overseas territories which were attacked. This had been misunderstood, being regarded as if in chronological order of importance.

Lord Strabolgi said that Australia and New Zealand thus thought that they would be the last to be supported in the event of an attack. “Our anxiety in the Great War was to induce our enemies to go to sea,” said Lord Strabolgi. “I suggested to my friends in New Zealand and Australia that there would be great joy in Whitehall if it was heard that a hostile squadron was bound for the South Pacific, for it is just what we want.

“The mischief arose from Mr Chamberlain’s unfortunate phraseology, and the matter should be put right as soon as possible. ”
