THE RAM FAIR

Keen Sale for Romneys FINE WOOLS IN POOR DEMAND

The annual ram fair of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association was commenced yesterday on the Addington Show Grounds. Breeders were present from all parts of the island, and a number also from the North Island. The day was fine, and the fair was held under ideal conditions in this respect. Entries with last year compare as follows: 1038. 1939. English Leicester .. 1002 963 Border Leicester .. 201 246 Romney Marsh .. 293 774 Shropshire .. 10 23 Corriedale .. 1486 1355 Southdown .. 2124 1305 Byeland .. .. 54 61 Halibred .. .. 662 491 Merino .. .. 18 Dorset Horn .. Totals .. 5855 5221 As the entries show, the main reduction was in the Southdown section, the decline being 800 head. Corriedales showed a moderate reduction, and halfbreds a substantial one, whilst English Leicesters were slightly reduced and Borders increased. The main increase, however, was in Romney Marsh, which numbered 774 as against 298 last year. This breed has come remarkably into favour in the last two years, as can be judged from the fact that at the 1937 fair the total flock Romney rams forward were 123. Vendors of the Romney were represented yesterday from several‘districts in the Wairarapa and the Manawatu in the North Island, from Nelson, and by a number of breeders from Otago and Southland. Coming from such a distance, it was natural that the quality of the sheep should be of a high standard, and they certainly made an attractive display. With the practical disappearance of the fine wool premium it is the day of the strong■woolled sheep. The position in the matter of fair values is entirely reversed from a few years ago—for the time being, at all events./ The sheep generally yesterday came forward in good condition. The sale was conducted in three sections. and no time limit was imposed. The inspection prior to the sale cut out a few of the flne-woolled rams and English Leicesters. The Lamb Breeds There was a spirited sale of the Southdowns. the market opening well and continuing so lor all the better classes of sheep. Good types ranged from Bgns to lOgns, with secondary from sgns to 7gns, and quite a number of sales in the llgn region. Top price was 16gns—this was also top price of the fair —secured by E. J. Ham (Blenheim). The price was substantially in advance of the next figure, the pen being an exceptionally good one. Top price last year was llgns. The market was better than that of last year for Downs, a reason for which is probably that the supply did not exceed the demand, as it did last year. The display of the breed was jood, perhaps better than for some years. RyeJands were comparatively levy in number, but there was a free sale, improving as it progressed. Good average lambs ranged from 6gns to Bgns, with the best up to lOgns, at which figure Robt. Reid (Darfield) sold a pen of two. The Longwools As stated, the Romneys were much the most sought after sheep amongst the coarser woolled breeds. There were numerous prices ranging round about 9gns and lOgns, and the moderate sorts made in few cases below the sgns mark. There probably has never been at the fairs so many sheep from such widely scattered parts, distant breeders providing the great bulk of the Romney entry. Top price was 13igns, secured by Alan Galt (Mataura, Southland), for a pen of three. The North Island sheep met in most cases with a good sale. Four from the estate of Quentin Donald (Featherston) averaged lOigns. There was practically a complete clearance of the breed, but the market was inclined to ease over the later stages. ■ ■ Border Leicesters met with a steady demand at moderate prices, though there was a sharp demand for the few of the best pens. One of five from P. F. Dolan (Rakaia) topped the market for the breed at lOgns. Whilst there were a few sales round about 7gns, the bulk of the entry changed hands at Signs to 4igns. The English Leicester entry far exceded requirements, and there was a dragging sale at low prices. Most of the pens ranged between 2Jgns to Signs, but sheep from the better known breeders found owners at sgns and upwards. A good average was received by E. S. Taylor (Glasnevin) of Signs for more than 100 head. Vendors met the market, and there were comparatively few passings. Top price was Signs, secured by E. S. Taylor. The most disappointing breed were the Corriedales. Though there was a “tail,” it was not so pronounced as usual, and a lot of excellent representatives of the breed were offered. Prices ranging from 2Jgns to Signs were frequent, and it was rarely that double figures were reached. It took good types to find buyers at as much as 6gns. An outstanding pen from the estate of H. T. Little (Hui Hui) topped the market at 13igns. Passings were very heavy in the section, of rams which, in many cases, did not get beyond the upset price. The sale was one of the most disappointing on record for the breed, a result mainly of the eclipse—temporarily, no doubt—of fine wool. Halfbreds were really more of a drug than Corriedales. and passings were heavy. There were some outstanding pens of single sheep. , , , The sale of stud sheep will be held to-day. , The following is a range of values compared with that of last year’s;—
