UNIVERSITY MATCH DRAWN

FINE CENTURY BY DONNELLY A sparkling innings of 192 by M. P. Donnelly was the feature of the second and concluding day’s play in the annual cricket match between Canterbury University College and Otago University, played at Hagley Park oval. Canterbury made a much better showing in its second* innings, declaring at 320 for seven wickets, but just failed to dismiss its opponents in the time remaining for play, the match being drawn. Three sixes and 33 fours were included in Donnelly’s score. He was never troubled by the bowling, and reached his century in fast time before lunch. Scoring with powerful shots all round the wicket, he opened out even more freely in the concluding stages, six men being stationed round tne boundary line at one stage. Dougall also played a valuable innings for Canterbury, his 62 being a fine effort, while Ellis provided a useful stand, being undefeated with 27. The most successful bowler for Otago was Mac Donald, W'ith five for 93. Otago’s second innings opened sensationally, two wickets being down for no runs, three for 3, four for 11, and five for 19. It looked as if Canterbury would win easily, but useful stands by Baker, Farrell, and Gowland saved the situation, and the side managed to hold out till stumps, having nine wickets down for 125.
