Amendments Sought By Justices ANTENATAL TREATMENT WANTED (F;om Our Own Reporter.) TIMARU, March 15. To minimise or prevent the evil of abortion, it was decided at the annual conference of the Federation of New Zealand Justices of the Peace at Timaru to-day to urge the Government to amend the Social Security Act to provide for three months’ antenatal treatment and maintenance in an approved home for unmarried women and deserted wives, and the adoption at birth of the child by the State, subject to the consent of the mother, future arrangements for the child’s maintenance to be made without publicity to the mother. “This is a very serious problem.” said Mr W. Mclnnes (Taranaki) in moving the remit. “We all recognise that, and although we do not desire to make it any easier for unmarried women to have children, we do recognise that unmarried women have children, and possibly it will go on to the end of time.” The remit was seconded by Mr A. J. Stratford (registrar). Mrs E. Molesworth (Auckland) supported the remit on the ground that it might reduce the evil of abortion. It was alarming and disgraceful, she said, that the septic abortion deathrate shoflld be so high in New Zealand. The remit was carried.
