LICENSING MOTOR TRANSPORT
PROPOSAL FOR TOWN OPERATORS Crxms AitOCIATIO* TSLSGKi.it.) AUCKLAND, March 15. A proposal that motor transport should be brought under the provisions of the transport licensing regulations will be introduced to the conference of the New Zealand Drivers’ Unions in Wellington, commencing on March 30, by a remit from the Auckland Union. The proposal may also be the subject of a deputation to the Minister for Transport. The responsibility for issuing licences in centres rests now with the local authorities, but it is contended that under this system the licences are issued 'without regard to whether the licensee is capable of operating on an economic basis. “We believe that the bringing of town operators under the Motor Transport Act would eliminate the unnecessary waste caused by overlapping and ‘dead’ mileage,” said Mr L. G. Matthews, secretary of the Auckland Union to-day. He declared that in Auckland the carriers’ stands at 'all times of the day had trucks standing idle for hours on end.
