RACING AND TROTTING

TUEF GOSSIP

Reminders Nominations for the Westport Jockey Club’s meeting will close at 9 p.m. 'today. , . .. Acceptances for the first day of the Oamaru Jockey Club's autumn meeting will close at 8 p.m, on Thursday. Answer to Correspondent “Wager." Waiutu:—(l) Not m New Zealand. (2) Yes. In Hill Stakes, September 21, 1929 (Nightmarch third, Aussie unplaced), and in Epsom Handicap. October 5, 1929. Won by Nightmarch. Aussie unplaced. (3) Aussie beat Limerick. ’ ‘ ' Not for Trentham Spartan was an acceptor for the first day at Trentham. and it was-intended to race Master Hotspur in the Challenge Stakes on the second day, but the latter has not done well m the last week, and T. H. Gillett has cancelled the trip with the pair. Jumpers in Action Dividend jumped six hurdles at Riccarton yesterday, giving his usual attractive display. Supreme Court and Fol Roger were sent over four hurdles. The former jumped clean and fast, while Pol Roger shaped well for a novice. A Difficult Task Arctic Star is 8 daily attendant to the Riccarton tracks in charge ol L. Dawson, who has leased the gelding from Mr A. Syme. Dawson has devoted a Jot of time and patience in the endeavour to get him sound enough to race again, and it is hoped that he will be rewarded. Well Placed A decision as to what face Haughty Winner will contest at Trentham .on Friday has not yet been made, but A. E. Ellis has arranged to ride him in whatever race is chosen. On his two good performances on the course *n January, he cannot ( be considered harshly treated in either of his engagements, the Thompson and Railway Handicaps. First Foal Silver Scorn has a colt foal at foot to Royal Sun, and the youngster is said to be the best of this year's lot at the Woodville Stud, New South Wales. Thompson Handicap Three years ago Silver Ring won the Thompson Handicap with 10-6, and he was awarded the same in the next season. This year the top weight is Royal Chief with 9-8, with Smoke Screen (another four-year-old) next with 9-5. It is strange that the highest weight carried by a four-year pinner is 8-13 by Armlet in 1010. On this'season’s New Zealand form, Smoke Screen would be preferred to Royal Chief, who will.have to get somewhere near his Australian standard to have any chance. High Caste “There’s a horse who will beat Ajax next year" said a well-known judge after High Caste’s dashing victory in the second division of the Alma Stakes at Caulfield; “.The nearest approach to Phar Lap we have ever seen,” was another prominent,racing-man’s comment. So wa ; High Caste hailed as one of the greatest- racehorses in Australia,-. andturf writers declare that few b!gfi er and better two-year-olds have ever been seen in that country. That was before he had won the Sires’ Produce and the Alma Vale Stakes. A Woman Owner Miss D, Paget had an unusual day for her at Newbury recently. She won the three hurdle races with Prince Achille, Ard Macha, and Up Jenkins. On the second day at Newbury she won the Berkshire Hurdle Race with _ Slieve Mish, and ran second with Kilstar in a steeplechase. Inclusive of those at her stud. Miss Paget owns more than 100 horses, and she does a fair amount of betting, a portion of it at starting price. Miss Paget, first of all, took up motor-racing, but she gave that up because there was little or no return for the outlay, and no opportunity for betting. That did not appeal to. her, and she turned her attention to horse-rac-ing. Ajax’s Riders . ■ M. McCarten’s ride on Talking in the Caulfield Cup of 1937 must have been one of the costliest of his career, says an Australian writer. McCarten was suspended for allegedly' crossing too sharply, and, as a result, another rider had to be found for Ajax in . the Victoria Derby. H. Badger, who had had experience of the colt, was the obvious choice, and has since ridden him to 17 of his 18 successive wins. Those wins have been worth more than £BOO to him in 5 per cent, winning percentages alone, with the probability of several monetary presents having been added. Presumably cheques for that amount would have gone to McCarten had he not incurred the displeasure o i stewards. McCarten has had his share of lucky last-minute rides in important races. Heroic Prince in the' Australian Cup was one, but they hardly compensate for his misfortune in losing the steady income to be, derived from association with a. champion galloper. Only three jockeys—McCarten, Badger and Ted Bartle—have ridden Ajax in races. ' Bartle rode him only once for a win in the Cropper Plate at Randwick, and his presence in the saddle was because Badger had been suspended by the A.J.C. stewards.

Ashburton Trotting Club On Monday next the Ashburton Trotting Club will take; nominations for its autumn meeting,"which will he held at Addington on April 1. The use of the-course. hqs..been,granted tor that day by the Canterbury Park and New Zealand Metropolitan. Trotting Clubs because of the extensive alterations that are being carried out at Ashburton,’ For the day s racing the prize money will total £2875,, an average of more than £350 a-race. Because of the New Zealand, Metropolitan- Trotting Club’s Easter meeting being held so soon after the Ashburton fixture,' the club has had to arrange the classes of the different races to >void clashing with the , Easter. events, but, as usual, it has succeeded in presenting to owners a programme that should ensure a most successful meeting. The big attraction will be the .New Zealand Futurity Stakes, of a mile and five furlongs, for three-year-olds, and the good prize of £llOO will be distributed as follows: —First horse, £600; second £2OO, third £l5O, and' fourth £SO. while the breeder of the winner will receive-, £SO, and the breeders of the second and third horses £25 each. The final payment for this race must be made by .Monday-next. The Durbar Handicap, worth £SOO, is confined to horses that can do 4min 31sec or better, and the Rakaia Handicap, of a mile and a half, caters for 3min 30sec class or better horses. The .moder-ately-performed brigade will be seen in action in the two opening evems. the Allehton and Improvers’ Handicaps, and a prize of £250 has been set aside for unhoppled trotters' in the Stewards’ Handicap, of one mile and a half. There should be a ready response from owners when nominations for handicap events and final forfeits for the Futurity Stakes close on Monday next at 8 p.m. Wyndham T.C. A sum of £1330 will be distributed in prize money at the’Wyndham Trotting Club’s meeting, which will be held on Saturday. The Wyndham Trotting Cup, worth £3OO, is for horses that can do two miles in 4mln 44sec or better, quite a good stake for a race of this class. Hawera T.C. 1

For the Hawera Trotting Club’s meeting, to be held' on - Ajiril 8 and 10. £3280 will be offered in stakes, and much good prize ihbney should attract the attention of a number of Canterbury Owners. The, Hawera Cup carries the fine prize of £555, including a cup valued at £25, and it is for horses that can do 4min 38sec or better. This is the principal attraction of the first day’s card. On- the second day the Waimate Plains Handicap, of £450, 4min 38sec class, will cater, for good class performers. Nominations for all events will close on Monday, March 27. Van Derby

Reports from Australia credit the first foals of Van Derby with being of exceptional quality, and confidence is expressed in the Globe Derby horse proving a fine sire. Van Derby, trained in Auckland by F. J. Smith, will probably be raced at Addington next month. . Nell Volo

Nell Volo is shaping satisfactorily in her work at Takanini, and a good deal of interest is being taken in her displays. She was mated with Cloverdale earlier in the season, and there are hopes that she will prove in foal to the Abbedale horse.

Lucky Jack and Parisienne In commenting on the finding of the / board of the New Zealand Trotting Association on the running of Parisienne and Lucky Jack at the last Forbury Park' meeting, "Sentinel,” in the "Otago Daily Times,” has the following:—"The ‘Star Chamber’ method of holding an inquiry by the Trotting Association and the meagre information supplied in connexion with it cannot be tolerated in the interests of light harness racing, or, indeed, in the interests of those closely connected with -Parisienne and Lucky Jack. The Trotting Association ‘considered that the incident warranted a thorough investigation,’ and then delivered a verdict which really does more harm than good to the reputation of those most concerned and also to those in authority.”
