RIOT SUPPRESSED BY POLICE
FRUIT-PICKERS’ STRIKE IN VICTORIA MELBOURNE, March 13. Shots were fired by the police and fire-hoses were used in an attempt to subdue 500 rioting fruit-pickers in Redcliffs. For more than two hours the police, townspeople, and blockholders struggled with the pickers. It is believed that a brawl among several pickers led to a riot, and a general fight began. At one stage 2000 persons were struggling in the streets. The firing of shots and heavy streams of water from the hoses dispersed the mob.
