LIFE SAYING
CANTERBURY GAINS EMPIRE AWARD The Canterbury branch of the .Royal Life-saving Society has been .warded the William Henry memorial cup for 1938, according to advice received from the London executive by the New Zealand Council at a meeting last evening. The cup which is competed for by teams from all over the British Empire, is awarded to the branch which shows the highest percentage increase in awards over trie average for the previous two y ea l?. - t , Auckland came second and Victoria, British Columbia, third. The cup was won by Auckland in 1937 and by Weilingtoft in 1935. _ _ Advice was also received from London that the number of awards issued last year throughout the world was more than 105,000. The society had been, aiming to reach 100,000 for some years. During the meeting two films showing life-saving activities, sent from London, were shown. It was considered, however, that they were not suitable for instruction purposes in New Zealand. ; Mr G. E. Billson presided..'
