GERMAN EXPLORERS IN ANTARCTIC
DISCOVERY OF HUGE AREA CLAIMED (Received March 10, 7.15 p.m.) BERLIN, March 9. Captain Paul Ritscher, operating by air from the Lufthansa aerodrome shipe Schwabenland, claims the discovery of 135 ; 000 square miles of the Antarctic Continent between 5 degrees west and 15 degrees east longitude, extending inland to 75 degrees south latitude. The area includes mountain ranges and a high central polar massif.
The German Official News Agency, reporting on Norwegian claims to sovereignty over certain Antarctic territory, declared that the sovereignty over this area was now claimed by Germany. The agency says; “As far as pan be seen from the documents in Germany, these Norwegian explorers have not even flown over, let alone trodden on, the territory which it is now discovered was fully explored by the German expedition.**
