RUGBY LEAGUE

MEETINGS HELD IN DULLER DISTRICT ADDRESSES BY ORGANISER Meetings of the Westport Rival and Millerton Ranger Rugby League clubs were held during the week and were attended by Mr T. F. McKenzie, organising secretary for the Inangahua League. At the Rival Club’s meeting, the chairman (Mr H. McKeowan) reviewed the activities of the last year, and said that the early meeting showed a desire to establish the game on a solid footing in the Duller district again this year.

Mr McKenzie addressed the meeting and said after a week in the Duller district he was satisfied that the League code was in for a prosperous period. He said that Messrs J. A. Redwood (president) and H. Wilson (deputy-chairman), of the New Zealand Rugby League, would visit Westport during the week-end, and would address a meeting on Sunday evening of all interested in the code in the Buller district.

The following were appointed an organising committee for the club:— Messrs H. McKeowan (president), H. McCormack (chairman), R. Matthews (secretary), L. Hawes, J. McManus, H. R. Smith, R. Lynburn, and E. V. Hanstock. At Millerton, Mr McKenzie also gave an address and was assured of the support of the Ranger Club this season.

Miss M. Higgins left yesterday for Christchurch.

Mr R. G. Stevenson left yesterday on a holiday visit to Rotorua. Mr R. O’Brien yesterday left on his return to Ashburton.

Mr W. Sherman yesterday left on a visit to Wellington. Mr L. Heyward left yesterday on his return to Wellington. Mr A. McLagan is visiting Wellington.

Miss J. Paul left yesterday on a visit to Christchurch. Mrs H. Lane will leave on Tuesday on a holiday visit to Scotland.

WESTPORT

Lieutenant B. J- Mathewson, of the Nelson, Marlborough, and West Coast Regimental Depot, has been promoted to the rank of captain. Mrs A. Ayres (Westport) has left on a visit to Sydney, to her daughter, Mrs McCarthy. The Hon. G. L. Hunter, M.L.C., and Mesdames J. Beban and Mulqueen (Christchurch), were visitors to Westport yesterday. Mr T. Mathewson (Wellington) has been appointed radio operator at the new Carter’s beach aerodrome, Westport. He is a native of Westport and has served on the Chatham Islands.

LAST SEASON REVIEWED IN ANNUAL REPORT

Mr R. I. McGregor presided at the annual meeting of the Murchison Golf Club.

“The last season has been the most satisfactory since the inception of the club,” said the annual report. “This was probably because of the fine weather at the week-ends, and the enthusiasm displayed by the committee and most of the members. The active membership increased from 73 to 85. Home and home matches were played with the Redwoods Valley Club. Increased interest was shown by members in all competitions. The winners of the principal events were:—Stewart Championship Cup, J. B. Milligan; runner-up, Oliver Hodgkinson. Dewar’s Cup, C. Rait; runner-up, Jas. Milligan, jun. Borkin Cup, H. Milligan, jun.; runner-up, E. Watts. Sykes’ Cup (handicap), J. Milligan, jun.; runner-up, W. Borkin. Mammoth Cup (women’s championship), Mrs McGregor;, runner-up, Miss Dellow. Logan Cup, Miss P. Borkin; runner-up, Mrs Thurlow. Ladies’ Handicap Cup, Miss O. Wallace; run-ner-up, Miss Mansen. “The country clubs’ championship was played last season for the first time on the Redwood Valley course. The event had been allotted to Murchison in the coming season. The prospects for the approaching season are very satisfactory as there is every likelihood of maintaining the present membership,'and with the-recent im-, provement the course should be in better order than ever before.” The election of officers resulted:— Patron, Mr. H. Armstrong, and the women’s club captain.

FIRE AT WESTPORT

The Westport Fire Brigade was called to an outbreak of fire at Mr J. Keoghan’s residence, Westport, on Wednesday, which was subdued before much damage was done. Mr Keoghan was away from Westport competing at the Dominion rifleshooting championships.
