NEON LIGHTING ON BEACONS

CONTRIBUTION TO SAFETY DECISION OS GREYMOUTH HARBOUR BOARD An important contribution towards increasing the safety factor for shipping frequenting the port of Greymouth by installing neon lights in place of electric lights on navigation beacons was decided upon at the monthly meeting of the Greymouth Harbour Board held on Wednesday evening. Mr J. Ryall presided. Improvements to the navigation lights at the port were the subject of a report from the engineer (Mr D. C. Milne) in whose recommendations the harbourmaster (Captain H. Moar) concurred, and it was decided that the engineer’s recommendations be carried out in their entirety. In reply to Mr A. H. McKane, the engineer said that some of the neon light signs on Greymouth business premises would have to be eliminated or altered. . Advice was received from the .stationmaster at Greymouth that the district engineer and the district traffic manager would arrive soon from Christchurch to discuss with the board and representatives of shipping interests the construction of a timber loading berth at the west end of the wharf. Permission was given to the Greymouth Trotting Club to take up to 500 loads of spoil yearly from a mudflat to the south of Riverbank road. Tributes were paid to the manner in which the engineer had solved to a great extent the problem of the shoaling on the bar by the building of groynes. It was said that the engineer’s theory had been proved to be fact.

Accounts totalling £2048 15s 6d were passed for payment. Receipts during the month totalled £2319 15s 2d, and the harbout fund account had a credit balance of £2198 3s lOd.

BUSINESSMEN AT GREYMOUTH

STRONG ASSOCIATION SAID TO BE NEEDED

In future, meetings of the committee of the Greymouth Business Association will be held at least every month and general meetings of members will be called at any'time the committee considers necessary. This was a decision reached at the annual general meeting of the association held on Wednesday evening. Mr S. B. White presided.

Arrangements were made for the president and the secretary and the members of the committee to interview various business people in an attempt to get them all to join the association and to make one organisation which Would include the whole of the business interests of the town.

The necessity of having a strong association was mentioned by Mr P. Beck, who said that the rules provided for the inclusion of all wholesalers, retailers, hotelkeepers, and tradesmen. It was essential that the interests of all these should be considered and that all should have a voice in any matters of benefit to the town. The present membership roll of 80 could easily be doubled. The election of officers resulted: — President, Mr P. Beck; vice-president, Mr J. Steel; secretary, Mr O. C. Joyce; committee, Messrs J. W. Greenslade, K. Balchin. J. Tennent. R. Stopforth, A. E. Kilgour, A. Harrison, R. Anderson. and C. Dawson; auditor, Mr Greenslade.
