REPORT ON RECENT MEETING

The committee of the Westland Racing Club met recently; Mr M. Houston presided. , The Internal Affairs Department notified the refund of £lB2 2s 9d from the December race meeting. The New Zealand Racing Conference requested nominations for the biennial election of representatives to the district committee and the Racing Conference. Mr F. McGregor (Hokitika) was nominated for the district committee and Mr J. B. Auld (Reefton) for the Racing Conference. The Hokitika Whippet Club forwarded £2 2s. The treasurer’s statement of the last race meeting showed the estimated receipts at £3lOl 2s 6d, and the expenditure at £2864 12s 9d, the surplus being £236 9s 9d. Government taxation paid for the meeting was: Totalisator £476 6s 4d, dividend tax £520 12s, stakes tax £ls, amusement tax £3l 2s; total £1043 Os 4d, from which a rebate of £297 14s was anticipated. The race ball showed a surplus of £sl 7s 9d.

WELCOME RAINFALL AT INANGAHUA

With a very dry period at the end of February and less than two inches of rain for the month, the Inangahua district, which had been for 17 days without rain, was showing the lack of moisture, and rain which started on Wednesday night, and fell steadily almost all day yesterday, will do an immense amount of good in the district. An absence of wind with the steady soaking of the fall will brighten the pasture and gardens. The Reefton Swimming Club was compelled to close the swimming bath as no supply of water from the town reservoirs was available for filling. The break in the weather will enable the baths to be refilled.
