FATALLY BURNT WHILE ATTEMPTING RESCUE

INVERCARGILL RESIDENT’S DEATH

(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEQBAM.) INVERCARGILL, January 14. Robert Fraser, aged about 37, died this morning from suffocation received in an outbreak of fire in his home at 4.30 o’clock. Mrs Fraser, three children, and the housekeeper managed to leave the house, but it was found that the fourth child was left inside. The front portion of, the house was burning fiercely when Fraser returned to the burning building. When the brigade broke in, he was discovered lying in the hall, badly burned on the shoulders and face, but still breathing. He died on the way to the .hospital. The child was rescued in a passage and is making a good recovery from slight burns. CARS COLLIDE NEAR MORVEN TWO PERSONS IN HOSPITAL IXHE PRESS Special Service. 1 WAIMATE, January 15. When two cars met in a head-on collision on the Main South road near the _Morv.en cemetery corner about 10.15 on Saturday, two passengers in one of the cars were admitted to the Waimate Hospital. John Robert Ksan, Rangiora, tne driver and only occupant of one car, was going north and was involved in a collision with a car driven by John Patrick Fleming, a farmer of Ikawai. The injured were John Francis Fleming, of Pikes Point road, a cousin of the driver, who suffered injuries to the face and the head from flying glass, and Miss Mary Helen Cahill, of Oamaru, who suffered severe injuries to the legs. Their condition last night was described as satisfactory. Kaan also suffered facial injuries, but was discharged after receiving medical attention.

MOTOR COLLISION AT CHEVIOT

SIR WALTER CLIFFORD INJURED

In a head-on collision in the early hours of yesterday morning near Cheviot, head injuries were suffered by Sir Walter Clifford.

Sir Walter Clifford, who was being driven by his son-in-law, Mr Alf Brustad, in a truck, was proceeding south when the collision occurred. Mr S. L, Orchard, who was sitting in the back seat of the other car, with his wife, received a cut on his face. Both of the injured men are 85 years of age.

The accident was not a severe one, and Mr Brustad was able to drive his motor-truck to Christchurch, Sir Walter Clifford being admitted to the Lewisham Hospital at 5 a.m. The other car was towed away from the scene of the accident.

Sir Walter’s injuries are not regarded as being serious.

GIRL GUIDE INJURED AT NEW BRIGHTON

Struck in the back by a falling branch from a poplar tree, Esme Sincock, of 9 Mathers road, was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital yesterday morning. The girl, who is 13 years old, was attending a girl guides’ camp at New Brighton. She suffered injuries to her back and her hands and her condition is considered to be serious.

When its engine stalled on the railway line at the Awarua crossing on the Bluff line a car carrying seven women and two children was carried along the line for two chains by the engine of an excursion train, and hurled over a bank. It turned over two or three times as it fell, and was completely wrecked; but all the nine occupants climbed from the demolished vehicle with only minor cuts and bruises. KNOCKED OFF BICYCLE Knocked off his bicycle by a motorcar while riding down Spencerville road on Saturday night, L. G. Kaan, of Brooklands, suffered serious injuries to his right leg. He was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital at 9.15 p.m.

CAR AND MOTOR-CYCLE IN COLLISION

Minor injuries to his chest and left hand were suffered by F. Lloyd, of 47 Berlington street, on Saturday night in an accident between a motor-car Vv\s matot-cycla, at ttva comer of Brougham and Colombo streets. Lloyd was treated as an outpatient at the Christchurch Hospital.
