Mr H. O. Devenish Meares (Fendalton) and his granddaughter. Miss Peggy Loughnan (Lower Hutt), who has just completed her training at the Christchurch Hospital, will leave to-morrow for a motor tour of the North Island, including a visit to North Auckland and the kauri forests.

Mrs John Grigg (Fendalton) is visiting her son and daughter-in-law, Mr and Mrs J. H. Grigg, Longbeach.

Mr and Mrs George Aitken and their sons (Fendalton), who have been visiting Mr and Mrs John Montgomery, “Braelangwell,” Ashburton, returned to Christchurch last evening. Mr and Mrs C. G. Wilkin (Fendalton) who have been spending a fortnight motoring in Marlborough and Nelson, returned home last evening, travelling by way of Lewis Pass.

Mr and Mrs C. S. Thomas and family (Innes road) returned last evening from a holiday spent at Hanmer Springs. Mrs Edwyn Wilding ■ (Te Mania, Conway) will go to-day to visit Mrs Gerald Anderson, at Charteris Bay. Mrs D. P. Dickinson (Nigeria), who is visiting her sister, Mrs Arthur Grigg, Surrey Hills, will stay with Miss Margot Hall, Hororata, before returning to Christchurch. Mrs Walter Radford (Fendalton), who has been spending some weeks in, Hokitika, has returned to Christchurch.

Mr and Mrs C. T. Ashton (Oamaru), who have been staying with Mr and Mrs T. Warren, Packe street, have returned home.

Mr and Mrs H. P. Piesse and family (Papanui) have returned from a camping holiday spent at Queenstown and Lake Wanaka. Miss M. Richardson, who has been visiting her sisters, the Misses Richardson (Papanui road), has returned to Gisborne.

Miss Mabel Little (Park terrace), who was the guest of Miss N. Pettigrew (“Willow-Bank,” Waiau) for the New Year holidays, returned home yesterday. Mr and Mrs J. Skinner (Dunedin) are the guests of Mrs Bernard Fanning, Riccarton. Mrs and Miss Long (Brisbane) and Mr and Mrs Holderness (Auckland) are amongst guests at Warwick House.

Mr and Mrs Malcolm Powrie (Cashmere Hills), who have been staying with Mrs F. C. May, Timaru, are now the guests of Mrs K. H. Hargreaves, Kakahu. Mrs Frank McConville, Misses Joan and Ngaire McConville, Mr and Mrs Boucher, Miss Helen Hickman (Christchurch), Miss Mona Hannan (Greymouth)., and Mr J. D. Mahoney are spending a fortnight’s holiday in Timaru. Miss Sheila Macdonald (Fendalton) left yesterday for Timaru to visit Mrs T. C. Maling. Mr and Mrs P. A. Mickle (Fendalton) will leave for Wellington to-night to connect with the Awatea for Sydney, where they will be the guests of Mr and Mrs T. C. Taylor, Vaucluse.

The Rey. W. Bower Black and Mrs Bower Black (Auckland, formerly of Christchurch) will leave New Zealand on January 17 by the Awatea, en route for England. They expect to be away about eight months. Mr and Mrs Sinclair, jun., have returned to Rangiora after spending the holidays with their parents at Bennetts.

Dr. Beatrice Nelson (Palmerston North) will leave for Australia .on January 24 to take up a position on the staff of the Townsville Hospital, Queensland. In the Wellington Chamber ofCommerce examinations the winner of the scholarship award, Miss Thelma C. McMenamin, is the 18-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs W. H. McMenamin, Ferry road. She was educated at the Ferry Road Convent School in primary and secondary subjects, and subsequently took a course at Digby’s Commercial School for two years in the subjects in which she qualified for the Chamber of Commerce award. In the Chamber of Commerce examinations the subjects were shorthand, typewriting, bookkeeping, handwriting, and office practice. Miss McMenamin passed with honours in the first two subjects and passed with distinction in the other three. Miss Nelle Scanlan, the wellknown New Zealand author and journalist, arrived in Christchurch from Blenheim last evening, accompanied by her’ niece, Miss Babette Rogers, Palmerston North. Miss Scanlan will spend the week-end in Christchurch and -will then visit Mount Cook and later the West Coast, returning to Wellington via Nelson and Blenheim. Miss Scanlan, who last visited Christchurch six years ago, is staying at the United Service. Hotel. The lady editor of “The Press” most gratefully acknowledges a donation of 5s from Mrs C. B. Russell, Worcester street for the sanatorium cinema, and £ 1 from A.S.A. for the Sunlight League’s health camp. Mr and Mrs H. Miss Dorothea Earl (Heaton street) returned home yesterday by aeroplane from Blenheim. Miss Nancy Till (Christchurch) has been the guest of Mrs Muirhead, Aparima, Southland. Miss Rose Hinchey, daughter of Mrs ,W. Hinchey, Gala street, Invercargill, who has been nursing at the Cambridge Aldershot Military Hospital, England, has now completed two years’ service there and will leave on January 16 for Bombay, where, in accordance with the usual regulations, she will be stationed at la military hospital in India,

Mr .and Mrs C. L. Richards (Christchurch) and their son are spending a holiday with Mrs ,J, Hensley, Invercargill. Miss Dorothy Lennie (Christchurch) is the guest of Mrs W. Swale, Limehills, Invercargill. Mrs Eilwen Murphy, at a commercial conference in Rotherham recently, said that if all young architects had to do a spell as domestic servants there would be a wonderful improvement in the planning of houses.

A “cradle roll” social was held by the Opawa branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. The president (Mrs R. Faulkner), assisted by Mrs W. Cooke, cradle roll superintendent, welcomed the mothers and children. Each child received a toy. An address was given by Mrs C. W. Barrell.
