SECOND CRICKET TEST
M.G.C. BATTING AGAINST SOUTH AFRICA (Received January 2, .12.5 a.m.) CAPE TOWN, December 31. Rain delayed the beginning of the second cricket - test between the Marylebone Cricket Club and South Africa till 5.30 p.m. The attendance W3.S small. Hammond won the toss. The wicket/ when uncovered, was true, and the outfield slow after a night of rain. The teams are;—
England—L. Hutton, P. A. Gibb, E. Paynter, W. R. Hammond, W, J. Edrich, L. E. G. Ames, B. H. Valentine, H. Verity, D. V. P. Wright, K. C. Fames, and Goddard, with N. W. D. Yardley as twelfth man. South Africa—J. Melville, B. Mitchell, A. D. Nourse, H. F. Wade, A. B. Langton, A. W. Briscoe, N- Gordon, E. Q. Davies, P. G. van der Bijl, E. A. B. Rowan, and X. Balaskas. Langton’s accurate length worried Hutton, who succumbed to a breakback in Gordon’s first over. Paynter was beaten by Langton’s break. Gibb escaped being run out when he was at 25. Scores: — ENGLAND.
