Mr A. W. Jones and Mr Gordon J. Reed, of Invercargill, and Professor T. D. Adams, of the University of Otago are on their way to Wellington to join the Awatea for Australia. The party will go to Sydney first and then to Brisbane, and will make an extensive tour of Queensland. An overland trip to Canberra will also be included in the visit.

Mr A. H. Cockayne, Director-General of Agriculture, returned to Wellington on Saturday by the Napier Star after spending seven months in Australia, Canada, and Great Britain investigating agricultural matters of interest to his department.

Colonel H. H. Broome, C.1.E., F.R.C.S., Indian Medical Service (retired), arrived at Wellington from England by the Napier Star on Saturday. Colonel Broome expects to be in New Zealand until April, and intends to visit both the South and the North Islands for the trout fishing.

Mr H. V. Lawry, manager of the South British Insurance Company, Ltd., Dunedin, for the last eight years, has received advice from the head office of the company in Auckland of his transfer to Perth as manager for Western Australia. Mr J. W. Normie, manager in Napier, has been appointed to a similar position in Dunedin.

Mr M. E. Vardy, retired manager of Barclay’s Bank, Victoria, Natal, South Africa, who is on a world tour, has arrived at Wellington from Auckland.

Mr R. B. Thomas, of Imperial Chemical Industries of Australia and New Zealand, Ltd., who is retiring after nearly 50 years’ continuous service with the company, was entertained at a dinner at Melbourne recently by his colleagues. The managing director (Sir Lennon Raws) gave to Mr Thomas, on behalf of the staff, a wireless set, and to Mrs Thomas a coffee set.

Mr L. E. Vance, who has been attached to the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., at Melbourne, as manager of the Palatine Insurance Company, Ltd., for which the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., act as general agents and attorneys, retired as from December 31. He will be succeeded by Mr Roy A. Nutting. The Federal Director-General of Health (Dr. J. H. L. Cumpston) and the senior Commonwealth Medical Officer (Dr. M. J. Holmes) will represent the Federal Government at the cancer conference in New Zealand on January 15. The two Commonwealth medical men will attend the meeting at the invitation of the New Zealand Government, Other leading Australian doctors will read important papers on the prevention and treatment of cancer.
