INCREASE IN CUSTOMS

FIGURES FOR GREYMOUTH HIGHER COLLECTIONS FROM SALES TAX

During December 20 vessels, totalling 7796 tons, entered the Port of Greymouth and 21 vessels left the port. In December, 1937, 20 vessels, totalling 8705 tons, arrived and 23 vessels, totalling 10,317 tons, left the port.

There was an increase of £10,488 2s Id in the collections at the Greymouth Customhouse during the year just ended, compared with 1937. The total collections for the year amounted to £155,475 12s 9d, compared with £144,987 10s 8d during 1937. Sales tax collected during 1938 totalled £34,236 2s lid, compared with £31,507 17s 9d in 1937, an increase of £2728 5s 2d. Customs duties collected last year totalled £55,008 11s Id. compared with £50,299 8s 2d in 1937, an increase of £4709 2s lid.

Collections during the quarter just ended, with figures for the corresponding quarter in 1937 in parenthesis, are; Customs duties, £15,763 0s lid (£12,984, 9s 6d); sales tax J £9685 16s Id (£7991 17s 3d); total collections, £43,731 7s lid (£38,877 18s 2d), an increase of £4853 9s 9d.

Collections during December, with the figures for December, 1937, in parenthesis, are: Customs duties, £5576 12s 8d (£4.621 18s lOd); sales tax, £3107 6s 9d (£2656 9s lOd): total collections, £14,923 15s 2d (£13,738 17s 2d).
