TWO CALLS TO FIRES

NEW BRIGHTON VOLUNTEER BRIGADE i The New Brighton Volunteer Fire Brigade received two .calls to fires during the New Year holidays, and prevented .serious damage being done. The first call was received at 3.45 p.m on Saturday, to a grass fire on the Esplanade, opposite Lonsdale street, between Central Brighton and North Beach. The two fire engines of the brigade, were quickly on the scene, and with the aid of the bucket pumps, extinguished the fire, although it scorched two of the 11 pine trees surviving put of the 200 planted on this area by the beach 20 years ago. The brigade received a second call at 7;35 on New Year’s morning to a scrub fire at the corner of the' Esplanade and Jervpis- street. The brigade, under Superintendent W. H. Stokes, attended with two engines. The fire was put out before it reached a dwelling on the adjoining section.
