Mr and Mrs C. P. Goldstone (Hokitika) and their infant daughter are spending the Christmas holidays in Christchurch. Miss Lilian Newall (Tai Tapu) is spending a holiday with friends in Auckland.

Mrs Izard (Nelson) arrived jin Christchurch on Saturday to visit her daughter, Mrs Aylmer Vivian, Riccarton.

Misses Rose and Eva Hutton (“Bangor”), Janet Cooke, and Nora Firth (Papanui), Messrs H. Helmore, G. Hutton, and J. Todhunter will be members of Mrs J. Mowbray Tripp’s house party at “Silverton,” Geraldine, for the New Year. Miss Aileen Knight has arrived from the North Island, to take over the position of Nurse Inspector, a post from which Miss A. Buckley will retire on Saturday. Miss Knight is staying with her mother, Mrs H. H. itnight, College Flats, Cashel street west.

Brigadier-General and Mrs M. J. Lenihan left London on December 17 for New Zealand, and expect to arrive in Christchurch on January 31. Mrs Lenihan was formerly Miss Mina Ward, of Manchester street north.

Miss A. Bowling (Montreal street) is visiting her sister, Mrs Maitland, Westport. Miss J. Turnbull (Timaru) is.visiting Mrs G. B. Bullock, Fendalton.

Mr and Mrs J. R. B. Murphy and Mrs H. B. Murphy (Dunedin) are the guests of Mrs A. W. Murphy (Kaiapoi) for the Christmas holidays. • Miss Patricia Rowe (Sumner) has left for a visit to Hawke’s Bay. Mr and Mrs Leslie Burt (Gloucester street west) left yesterday to visit Mrs Lyndon Macassey, Dunedin.

Mr and Mrs W. M. Norwood (Wellington) are visiting Mr and Mrs J, A. Redpath, Fendalton. Mrs Peter Markham (North Canterbury) is visiting her mother, Mrs D. Christie, Wanganui. Mrs A. K. Anderson, wife of the principal of Scots College, Sydney, a former headmaster of St. Andrew’s College, Christchurch, arrived in Wellington yesterday from Australia on her way to Dunedin to stay with her parents, Mr, and Mrs Irvine.

Sir William and Lady Hunt and Miss Edwards (Wellington) arrived in Invercargill yesterday and are the guests of Mrs W, E. Hunt, Titipua. Mr and Mrs Ralph Paterson and Miss Enid Paterson are Dunedin visitors to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs J. H. Meek, Miss Audrey Meek, and Mrs M. B. Kyle (Dunedin) are spending a holiday at Hanmer Springs.

Mr and Mrs J. Robertson (Invercargill) are visiting Hanmer Springs. Misses Lita and Ena Robertson, who accompanied them to Christchurch on Saturday, left yesterday for the West Coast.

Mr Val Gielgud, production director of the British Broadcasting Corporation, says that women are destroying the romance of radio. In many homes the radio is turned on at 10.30 in the morning and turned off again at midnight. He blames women for this.

The lady editor of “The Press” gratefully acknowledges and reciprocates kindly greetings from the North Canterbury Post and Telegraph Women’s Association. At the last meeting of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture (Incorporated), held in Wellington, congratulations were extended to Mrs Knox Gilmer OJI the award for 1938 of the Loder Cup. Father Christmas, wearing full Highland dress, arrived at Coker’s Hotel on Christmas morning, when Mr and Mrs T. N. Grant gave a Christmas tree party for about 50 children. Each child received a gift from the tree, and strawberries and cream, ice-creams, and sweets disappeared with amazing rapidity—evidence, from the children’s point of view, that the party was a great success.

Mrs G. F. Hall (Hataitai) is living in Hampstead with her daughter, Miss Cara Hall, and her son, Mr Stanley HalL The former, as holder of a pianoforte scholarship for the Royal Academy of Music, has entered upon her studies under Mr Vivian Langrish, and she is taking singing for her second subject. As the youngest student at the Royal Academy of Music, Miss Hall was chosen to present a bouquet to the Queen at the reception for Dominion students arranged by Lady Frances Ryder and Miss Macdonald of the Isles. Mr S. Hall is studying art and photography with Vandyk, Court photographer. Dr. Leslie Lipson, who has been appointed to the new chair of Public Administration and Political Science at Victoria College, Wellington, will arrive at Auckland with his wife by the Aorangi on February 8. Dr. Lipson, who is 26, graduated at Oxford, and, with the assistance of the Commonwealth Fund Fellowship, took his doctorate in Chicago. He is at present in Paris.

The children of Templeton Farm held their annual Christmas party, which was again provided for them by the generosity of Miss K. Jackson and her friends and helpers. The children gathered in a large marquee in the grounds, where a “party” tea was served. Station 3ZB conducted its children’s hour at the party. On the arrival of Father Christmas, the Christmas tree was dismantled, each child receiving a gift. A concert programme was then enjoyed and cheers were given for the donors of all the good things.
