NOTES ON THE RACING

\ [THE PRESS Special Service.*

AUCKLAND, December 26, A Good Colt

After running five seconds in as many starts, the three-year-old Beaupartlr scored a well-deserved victory In the Queen’s Plate, for which he was made an odds on favourite over Du Maurier. Beaupartlr was always well placed, and ran to the leaders quickly when L. J. Ellis gave him a kick at the turn. Over the last furlong he was always the winner, and won with something in hand. Beaupartir is a fine colt, who seems sure to win better races. Old Bill, securing a beautiful run ■ on the rails, finished solidly to be a good second, and he is definitely improving. Balinavar ran one of his best races, and after being in the first three all the way he was far from disgraced in being beaten by two good three-year-olds. Forest Acre made a creditable showing for fourth, and Pirate King weakened in the straight after being handy in the running. Du Maurier ran below expectations, although he made a forward move below the distance. , A Narrow Win

In a fine finish in the Grafton Hurdles, the third fancy. Charade, won narrowly from the improving Pyrenees after a great tussle in the run home. Charade Was very patiently ridden on the rails by A. Gilmer, and she had Just too much pace for Pyrenees when the pressure was applied. Pyrenees was also well ridden, by R. E. Thomson, and is much improved. Mlo Lume ran well enough to suggest that he is likely to win a race at the meeting. The favourite, Rozel, spoilt her chance by faulty jumping: but she was going well in front until she was almost down at the fence near the seven furlong post. Even after that she made a creditable showing. Small Boy went very fast to the first fence and crashed heavily. En Tour was a good way back when he Jell. The form of the others was not Impressive, although Kllberls and Stansted shaped fairly well for more than a mile and three-quarters. The Foal Stakes The high opinion Ellerslle track Watchers hold of High Caste was borne' out when he defeated the southern flyer, Beaulivre, in the Great Northern Foal Stakes, for which they were both heavily supported. Beaulivre. who drew No. 2 at The barrier, and Konneta, from the extreme outside, set a fast pace; but High Caste, who began from No. 7, never allowed them to get far away, and he f°°n ran to Beaulivre after the latter had taken the measure of Konneta. At the turn, however, Beaulivre was by no Seans beaten, and High Caste had to be Kicked up to the post to beat him by a heck- it was a case of two good colts meeting, and the one with the superior Physique prevailed. They outclassed the

others when it came to real racing. High Caste gave R. S. Bagby his first success in . a classic, and the young trainer • received many congratulations. An interesting feature of the success was that High Caste Is the first Ellerslie-trained candidate to win the race since Idas scored In 1901. Race for the Cup The Auckland Cup was one of the most disappointing for years. The field dawdled over the first mile In Imin 49sec. and the winner, Cheval de Voice, scored an end-to-end victory in the slow time of 3mln 30sec. Cheval de Voice was allowed to make his own pace In front, and after entering the straight with a clear advantage he sprinted home too well for the others. The only excitement was when Round Up made a game effort in the last furlong; but the winner never appeared in danger of defeat. Hitherto Cheval de voice has not been regarded as a likely horse to score at two miles, and whether he is a true stayer could not be determined from his performance on this occasion, as the race was run too slowly to be a real test of stamina. The other placegetters, Round Up and Dictate, were also little fancied, and they surprised by be-r mg so prominently placed. The favourites, The Buzzer, Willie Win, and Quadroon, took no part in the finish. The Buzzer and Quadroon pulled hard early, and the slow pace early was not to their advantage. Quadroon flattered the hopes of his supporters when he moved into third position near the five furlongs; but he was beaten at the turn. Master Briefly was handily placed most of the way, but failed to make any impression at the end. and was only fifth. Knight of Australia was fourth, without being dangerous. Wotan and Padishah, who were in the rear most of the way, ran disappointingly, although the latter was closer in sixth position than at any other stage. Mazlr and Arctic King also ran poorly. Cheval de Voice.is a five-year-old brown gelding by Vaals, son of Valais, whose stock have been doing well in the last couple of seasons. Fine Finishing Run

It was with a fine finishing effort that the three-year-old Good Passage won the Robinson Handicap from The Trimmer, who paid a solid price. Good Passage was not prominent until reaching the straight; but she smothered the opposition in the last little bit. Sir Robin, who went fast early, and attempted to lead throughout, The Trimmer, and Huntingmore had a great race for the minor places. Sir Robin faded into third place in the last few strides, and Huntingmore was a good fourth. Huntingmore did not have the best of luck in the running, and he was hampered slightly when The Trimmer bored out on him In the straight. White Gold, the favourite, was very badly placed early and failed to run on after making up a lot of ground. Favourite Wins Although she drew No. 17 at the barrier, the favourite. Disdain, was soon well placed behind Galilee and Stretto in the Railway Handicap, and she came through on the rails in the straight to score convincingly. She is a brilliant filly, who has a good way to go before reaching her best. Smoke Screen, after being slow away from No. 16, made a gallant effort on the outside for second, and just beat Galilee, who showed some of her former brilliance and may win soon. Stretto was always in the fight; but was steadied by her weight near the end, although she was a close fourth. Galilee, No. 14, and Stretto. No. 15. were also badly drawn at the barrier. Whirling and Courtcraft ran fine races, the latter putting in good work at the end. May Win Again Benefited by recent racing, Beau Repaire, the half-brother to Royal Chief, finished with fine dash to win the Nursery Handicap. Beau Repaire is just striking form, and he may score again soon. An outsider, Thurnvaals, always well placed, hung on solidly for second to pay more than a score, and Heroic Maid, who showed brilliant early speed from No. 15, was a good third. Glen Connell, after being squeezed back at the start, finished strongly for fourth. Classic, one of the pacemakers. tired quickly in the last half furlong. Scandal, the favourite. had his chance extinguished by being badly checked at the start. Valerian, who ran a good race, and Silver Stick found the disadvantage of outside post positions too great. Brilliant Win The champion three-year-old Defaulter endorsed all the good things that have been said about him by a brilliant victory in the Christmas Handicap, for which he was supported down to odds on. Although Olympus set a cracking pace with his light weight, and was five lengths clear at one stage, Defaulter was just behind him at the turn, and had the race won after passing the distance, although he swerved out suddenly about 100 yards from the post. Dark Shadow ran a good race for second, and Entail finished on to gain third.' Paddy the Rip, who was troubled by the early pace, was fourth. Olympus tired very quickly in the straight, and Hot Box weakened after making a forward move at the turn.

TURF GOSSIP

Lacked Experience Recollection gave a creditable display in his first race over battens at Wingatul yesterday, and will be all the better for the race. He Jumped well in spite of the unaccustomed going until he misjudged a fence near the three furlong post, and then drifted out.

Improved Showing Ponty was unfortunate in being one of the sufferers in an indifferent start of the Federal Handicap at Wingatui yesterday, and then ; finished close up to the dividend-payers. Ponty looked exceptionally well, and it will be surprising if he goes through the holiday racing without a return.

Expensive Failure Sovereign Lady did not move freely at any part of her engagement at Wingatui, and was beaten a long way from home. It was evident that she is of no u:e on a soft track. > Evergreen Mare A feature of the big race at Wingatui .yesterday was the solid finishing run of Queen of Song, who was ridden by her former usual jockey, J. Jennings. She was well beaten at the finish by Nlghtwings; but the manner in which she settled the remainder suggested that she is far from being a spent force. Encouraging Display Cape Gabo, who now races in the colours of a Dunedin owner, Mr D. Finnegan, narrowly missed winning in his first attempt for his new owner when he went down by a narrow margin to Second Innings at Wingatui yesterday. He looks a likely winner before returning home. Belied His Looks

Night Dress was confidently supported at Wingatui yesterday; but was

never within reach of the leaders, and finished well back.

Interesting Breeding Counterflight, runner-up to Straightdell at Wingatui yesterday, is by Lliad from Countersign, and Tupal, third place-getter, is by Hunting Son from Espistle, a good winner in the North Island some years ago.

Looks the Part Disband, the winner of the Trial Handicap at Wingatui, is from March Off, dam of Gold Boa, Valmarch, and Dismiss. He has had a private reputation for some months, and although he failed at Riccarton last month, he was still in strong public demand yesterday, He is an attractive-looking gelding, and makes more appeal as a stayer than any of his relatives.

Bred at Hororata Princess Minerva, one of the field for the juvenile event at Wingatui, is owned by Miss L. Gates, and is trained at Washdyke by E. J. Ellis, who also trains Night Prince. Both were bred by Mr E. Gates, the former being by Nightmarch from Red Queen, dam of Studley Royal, and the latter by Nightmarch, from Miss Victoria, dam of Lady Middleham. Night Prince was sold by Mr Gates to the Hon. G. R. Hunter and the Hon. P. C. Webb, and will take time to come right. Coming On Prudent Prince created a big impression by his finishing run at Wingatui, and his winning turn is not far off.

NOTES 6N THE RACING

The first favourite, Clive Casey, took charge after two furlongs in the Stockton Handicap, and trotting steadily was never headed. Worthy Mint went to a gallop soon after leading out from the start, and never settled down. Rich Harvest trailed the winner for most of the way, but made three bad breaks and was beaten for second by Bon Haven, who made up a lot of ground in the last half mile.

John Worthy made the early running in the Seddonvllle Handicap from Mona Palm, High Noon, .Worthy Scot, and Silk Attire. The last-named came with a great run two furlongs from home and Mona Palm also challenged the leader. In a good finish Mona Palm won comfortably from John Worthy, with Silk Attire tiring In third place and High Noon fourth. The winner is a promising mare by Bingen Palm—Mona Logan, and was having her first race. Battlevale was made a hot favourite for the big race, but after being slow away he never threatened danger. Our Fay led out from Gold Pot, Stamboul, and Purina, and after half a mile was covered Gold Pot dropped back and Our Fay continued to race along nicely In front. Three furlongs from home Gold Pot and Purina put In fast runs, with Happi Improving its position. Our Fay came on well to beat Gold Pot, with Purina a good third and Happi next. After nearly being upset on the Journey, Mazaire .put up a good performance to win the Addison Handicap tn a great finish with Devotion, who ran a good race after being well placed all the way. Devotion, Radiant Prince, and Maltravers made the early running, but Mazaire made up ground over the last half mile, with Silk King and Maltravers also handy. Mazaire just beat Devotion, with Silk King finishing on for thrld and Maltravers and Tristan next.

The Roche Handicap was a keen race, with all five starters possessing winning chances three furlongs from home. Rich Harvest led for a mile from Alvis, Clive Casey, Worthy Merit, and Bon Haven. The last-named made up ground gradually to take the lead in the last furlong and hold off challenges. Rich Harvest and Alvis made a considerable improvement on their early showings. Cavatina registered a good performance to win the Williams Handicap, but Super Jack, the second horse, may have been more dangerous If he had not been Interfered with when Boreas stumbled and fell soon after the start. Cavatina led the field by three lengths over the first two furlongs, and was followed by Silk Attire, Clive Broafc, and Honestus. Super Jack raced up to second two furlongs from home, and Silk Attire and Clive Brook commenced to tire. Cavatina went on to win comfortably from Super Jack, with Honestus finishing on well for third. Sure Potts disappointed his many admirers by going away slowly in the Dennlston Handicap, and failing to make any impression on the winner. Devotion, in the run home. The order for four furlongs was Tarn, Devotion, Lucess, Dusky Chum, and Sure Potts. Tarn weakened

when challenged by Devotion and Sure Potts, who had made up ground gradually. The order at the finish was Devotion, Sure Potts, Tarn, Silk King, and Lady Ann. Battlevale appreciated the holding going, and taking command after six furlongs won the President’s Handicap decisively. Major Guy piloted the field over the first circuit, attended by Storm Signal, Battlevale, and Travisque, and Gold Pot. Storm Signal was penned in when making a run three furlongs from home, but when he got out could not reach Battlevale. Gold Pot did not have the best of the running, and was a fair third, with Major Guy fourth. Logan Palm went a poor race.
