RACING AND TROTTING

TROTTING AT ASHBURTON

IRONSIDE WINS CUP

NELSON EDDY’S CHAMPION

STAKES

TOTALISATOR SHOWS £ 8767 INCREASE

The weather in the early morning was all against the Ashburton Trotting Club for its Boxing Day meeting, yesterday: but the day turned out fine and the racing was held under almost ideal conditions. The crotvd was one of the largest seen at this popular fixture, and the totalisator investments amounted to £36,302. an increase of £8767 on the £27,535 invested on the corresponding day last year. The opening event showed an increase of more than £ 1000, and this average was maintained during the day. The track was affected by the recent rains, but it still provided good going and generally the times registered showed a big improvement on the assessments. The disappointing feature of the day’s sport was the race for the Ashburton Cup for, while the finish was very exciting, the slow pace in the early stages mgde it anything but a real test of merit over tw<p miles The New Zealand Champion Stakes resulted in a clear-cut victory for Nelson Eddy, who, after a splendid performance, defeated a good field, including a warm favourite in the locally-owned Aldershot. NOTES ON THE RACING

Promising Young Trotter I The only redeeming feature of the i Mitcham Handicap was the good, solid display of trotting given by the three-year-old Bush Laddie, who trotted steadily throughout, and fairly outstayed the older horses. Beethoven, Judgment, Paddy’s Harvest, Native Ruler, and Bush Laddie were the early leaders, while Fire King was slow to begin, and the majority of the others failed to settle down. Down the back stretch. Lord Ernleigh made up ground, and he, with Co-Director, Beethoven, and Bush Laddie, raced in close company round the top turn, where Great Linnet put in good work. At the distance post Bush laddie held command; but he had to be driven hard to settle the pretensions of Great Linnet, who broke up. This gave Bush Laddie an easy victory, and a bad . break by Co-Director enabled Fire King to gain third money. After the placed horses there followed Co-Director, Lord Ernleigh, and Beethoven. •The winner is by Wrack from Cuplight, and is a very promising young trotter. For a horse of limited experience, he showed the proper racing temperament. He comes from the same stable as Sea Gift. Great Linnet, from 36 yards behind, looked like making a fight of it at the distance, but he tired badly. A slow beginning proved costly to Fire King, but over the last half-mile he showed more speed than anything else in the race. There are possibilities in this gelding, and he should win races before long. Lady Ede was never likely, and Paddy’s Harvest soon faded out. A Division Race

The first division of the Wakanui Handicap was run in the good time of Smin 24 3-ssec, and Chatmos, who was driven in behind Joan Grattan and Braw Lass over the early stages, put in a good run in the straight and went on to win with sbmething in hand from Drumcree, who made a good effort in the concluding stages. He was second ahead of Braw Lass. Joan Grattan, and Pursuit. The winner is an aged gelding by Wrack—Lady Superior, and a halfbrother to well-known performers ■in Cardinal Logan and Quality. A Fighting Finish

Nicely ‘ handled by F. G. Holmes, Mongolian won the second division, after a fighting finish with Petite. The race was full of interest, and most of the running was made by Brown Tap. Credit Balance, Petite, and Huguenot, while Poker Face lost ground in the early stages and was always well back. Mongolian made up ground gradually, and in the straight came through on the rails to win nicely from Petite, who challenged strongly from the distance post. Mongolian’s win was overdue, and on the win machine he returned double figures A Muddling Face Although the finish for the Ashburton Cup was one of the most exciting seen in this race, the contest generally was one of the poorest, and what promised to provide a true test of stamina resulted in little -better than a half-mile sprint. The first half-mile was run in Imin Msec, and the mile in 2min 22sec. Bonny Azure broke up at the start, and Pot Luck, who had been restless, also lost ground. Gallant Knight began very quickly, and at the end of a quarter of a mile he had a lead of six lengths from King’s Play and Ironside, with the rest of the field strung out. Gallant Knight was steadied, and before half a mile had been covered the field was bunched, and even Indianapolis, from 72 yards behind, had joined the field. As the stands were reached King’s Play was disputing the lead with Gallant Knight, and in a bunch followed Bonny Azure, Ironside, Plutus, Lucky Jack, Indianapolis, Parisienne, and Pot Luck. The pace brightened up a little in the next few furlongs; but the field was still in a bunch, with King’s Play and Bonny Azure in front, Plutus and Ironside handily placed, and Lucky Jack and Indianapolis in good positions. As the field straightened up for the run home there was every prospect of a great race. At the distance post the field lined up for battle, with Bonny Azure retiring, King’s Play in charge. Iron-

side coming through on the rails, Lucky Jack and Indianapolis challenging on the outside, and Plutus looking for an opening. The whole field was under a hard drive over the last furlong, but Ironside, who had a length’s lead 50 yards from the post, struggled home only a neck in front of Plutus, who, with a late dash, gained a neck verdict over King’s Play, with Lucky Jack a neck further away fourth, closely followed by Parisienne, Gallant Knight, Pot Luck, and Indianapolis. The race was not the test of staying powers the Ashburton Club had expected it to be, but the winner was well driven by J. Pringle, who saved all the ground possible, and though perhaps lucky in the straight, Ironside came with a rare burst over the last furlong. Plutus had all the best of the running, and, more a sprinter than a stayer, the race suited him nicely. He certainly finished with more dash than in some of his races. King’s Play, well placed all the way, appeared to be beaten a furlong from home, but he came with renewed dash over the last part and put up a valiant fight. Lucky Jack was possibly the worst served horse in the race by the slow pace set, and his stable-mate, Parisienne, was hemmed in for the greater part of the journey. Yet neither showed the brilliance expected of them. Gallant Knight failed to hold his place in a brilliant sprint, and Indianapolis, with a race run to suit him, appeared a light of other days. An Impressive Win

Quest won the McLean Handicap in impressive style after being well placed all the way. He fairly outclassed the field in the race from the distance.

Jesse Owens set out to make the pace. Panquitch stood on the mark, and Kilrea, pulling hard, was soon well back in the field. Cruiser, Wee Potts. Hidden Charm, Llewellyn’s Pet, Quest, and Waitemata were close attendants on the leader throughout. The pace was not fast, and at the distance post Quest came through the field and won comfortably by two lengths from Wee Potts, who was followed by Jesse Owens, Cruiser, Glenastle, Evora, and Kilrea.

Quest has been a consistent performer, and the comparatively slow pace in the early stages apparently suited him and his very competent driver. Wee Potts paced solidly. The disappointment of the race was Kilrea, whose great burst of speed was utilised too late in the proceedings. Nelson Eddy Shows Form

The New Zealand Champion Stakes saw the defeat of a very warm favourite in Aldershot, and it further confused the issue of three-year-old supremacy. Aldershot made a mistake early in the proceedings, and afterwards his driver asked him a bigger question than he could answer. The winner. Nelson Eddy, proved himself a high-grade pacer and a true stayer. Aldershot, from the back mark, went off very smartly but after going 100 yards he tangled and dropped back to last, while Nelson Eddy also began well and in a furlong he was just ahead of Shadowson, Revision. Centaurus, Wainoni Girl. Taiki, and Coquette. Aldershot settled down again and showed speed in racing up to his field. Revision took over the pace-making and down the back led Nelson Eddy, Shadowson, Wainoni Girl and Taiki; but half a mile from home Aldershot had moved up and Nelson Eddy had dropped back to third place. The last-named in getting out of a pocket had to drop still further back before entering the straight and then had to come round his field. . As the field turned for home Revision, Aldershot and Shadowson were the leaders with Coquette tucked in on the rails. Nelson Eddy commenced a great run from the top of the straight and a furlong from home he appeared to have the position in hand although, like the rest, he was under the whip. Aldershot faded and Nelson Eddy came on to win nicely from Coquette, who also outstayed Aldershot. Next to finish were Wainoni Girl, Shadowson, Revision, and Centaurus. This marked Nelson Eddy's third win, and he showed all the qualities of a first-class racehorse. Though Aldershot may not have had any luck in the running. Nelson Eddy would probably have beaten him under any conditions. He was not greatly distressed after his fine effort. Coquette, only a pony, showed rare tenacity in a hard finish, and Wainoni Girl, who had raced well in the New Brighton Stakes, was again close up in fourth place. The disappointment of the race was Shadowson, who had every chance but did not run on when real racing commenced. Bedrock made a mistake at the start and at no stage looked like taking a part in Vne finish. IteNision made most of the running, but could not see the journey out. She is a promising Ally, however, and should win races. From End to End Soon after the start of the Winslow Handicap, Guy Hugo raced to the front and setting a warm pace from the start he outstayed the field and won in the good time of Smin 24 l-ssec from a Smin 29sec mark. Captain Bolt lost a good deal of ground at the start and Sea Gift was also slow to find her feet. Guy Hugo at once took up the running with Royal Romance, Writer, Little Reta, Ganton, and Bittersweet following in that order. Guy Hugo still continued to trot soundly past the five furlongs post where Royal Romance broke and the leader’s nearest attendants were Little Reta, Ganton, and Bittersweet, with Lament and Peggotty making up ground. In the straight Guy Hugo drew out and the only one to issue a serious challenge was Little Reta, who broke 50 yards from the post. Lament, who was very tired at the finish, just struggled on to beat Ganton. The others were well beaten, and even Peggotty broke twice in the last two furlongs. A Good Stayer Jackaranda was responsible for a good performance in winning the Midsummer Handicap. After a slow beginning he went to the front five furlongs from home and in a hard battle

with Labouman he fought on with rare gameness to score a clear-cut victC>Credit Funds, Ivy Petersen, Laurene Wood, Labourman. Full Hand, Moana Tama Trevor de Oro, and Jackaranda was the order after five furlongs had been covered, but then Jackaranda improved his position and at the end of a mile and a quarter he was assisting Labourman to make the pace. The pair carried on at a merry pace round the top turn and into the straight, where most of the field were in serious trouble. At the distance post both leaders were being asked for their best; but Jackaranda held on the better and won by a length, while Credit Funds was four lengths away well clear of Laurene Wood and a number of horses that were fairly outclassed. Jackaranda held on well un der punishment and registered 4mm 32 3-ssec from a 4min 41sec mark, time almost as good as that made in the principal event by a horse assessed 16 seconds faster. Labourman fought on gamely, but met one just too good. The form of the remainder does not justify comment. A Sensational Finish

The final event of the day, the Boxing Day Handicap, provided the real thrill of the day’s racing and ended in a sensational win for Parisienne. who met interference in the straight, and had to change her course to get a clear run. The straight run for her was short, but she showed the speed of a real champion. Plutus appeared slow to move and Big Author at once ran to the front attended by Pot Luck, while Lucky Jack, with a lucky run on the rails, was soon in a handy position behind war Buoy. In this order the field raced into the back stretch and along to the six furlong post practically in a bunch. Big Author was still in command as the straight was reached, with Pot Luck. War Buoy, Lucky Jack and Bonny Azure all handy. Pot Luck raced to the front at the distance, leaving Parisienne with what appeared to be a clear run on the rails. It was plain that Pot Luck —possibly under pressure—eased into the rails, and D. C. Watts, driver of Parisienne, had to pull her out to make a run in the centre of the course. Seldom has such a brilliant pacer graced the Ashburton course and while the margin was a narrow one, the hoisting of Parisienne’s number brought a hearty cheer from the crowd. But for the interference in the straight Parisienne would have scored a decisive victory. Pot Luck failed to the challenge of a great little pacer, while Lucky Jack, putting up a great race, had too much ground to make up over the last part. Plutus. after losing a big stretch of ground at the start, did well to finish fourth. Big Author failed when asked a question and War Buoy again showed lack of his old-time dash.

NOTES ON THE RACING

Slayer Wins Recollection, having his first race oyer hurdles, was sent out favourite for the Otokio Hurdles, but although up with the leaders after passing the six furlongs he lost his place as the result of a bad jump at the three-furlong post and was never again likely. Slayer, also a novice and King Willow went to the front after half a mile and had the contest to themselves over the last three furlongs. Both took the last fence together, and Slayer outstaved King Willow in the run to the post. McHeath gathered in Recollechon at the straight entrance and four lengths for third money. There was then a very wide gap to Superex. whose rider lost an iron during the middle stages of the race. F j rst Success

Disband was the early leader in the Trial Handicap, but with half the Journey covered was steadied in behind the leaders, Remembo and Kippen, and with Jedburgh followed them into the straight. Kippen had sole charge at the distance, but both Disband and Jedburgh soon passed him and they fought out a hard battle. Disband proving the better stayer in a very slow-run race. Our Pal was in third place near to the post, but Neptune came from a back position to take the honours from'him. Great Baby, Kippen, and Spear Thrust were next. A Speedy Filly

Gold Salute and Prudent Prince disputed favouritism in the Dunedin Handicap and both paid place dividends, but were beaten by the Riccarton filly, Montessa, who led throughout. Montessa was followed into the straight by Janefield. Gold Salute, and Blissful Lady, with Prudent Prince making a fast run from a rear position. Montessa was still well clear at the distance and appeared to be a decided winner, but Gold Salute put in a late run and got to within half a length of her without, however, showing much sign of beating her. Prudent Prince completed his work very solidly to g al .b third money, two lengths in front of Slissfttl Lady, with Mondello at the head of the remainder. Montessa. who carries the slme colours as Nightcalm. was purchased at Trentham in March for 230 guineas and is trained by C. Emerson. An Overdue Victory Top Row. one of the outsiders of the field in the Federal Handicap, scored a narrow win from the favourite. Lady Leigh. Rodeur was first away frm J straggling start, Araboa, Ponty, and Wild Career being the slowest to move. Rodeur was followed early by Moneyless. Lady Leigh. Top Row, and Valmarch, and entered the straight In front of Moneyless, Lady Leigh, Wild Career, Ponty, and Top Row Lady Leigh had the two leaders beaten inside the distance but a little further on Top Row put in his claim, while Ponty also became prominent. In an interesting finish. Top Eow won from Lady Leigh and Rodeur with Ponty a length away in front of Araboa and Valmarch. This was Top Row s first win since he won the same race 12 months aE °" The Favolirite Fails

Sovereign. Lady, favourite for the Otago Handicap, failed badly In the soft SpmS and was always near the rear of the field. Valantua was the early leader, and he and Ardchoille raced abreast in front to the straight entrance, with Alma. Nightwings. Queen of Song, and Milford next. The run home had not long been in progress before Nifihtwings rushed to tfts lead, and she went right away to win by a wide margin from Queen of Song, who finished very fast to beat Valantua and Ardchoille. who finished abreast. Alma and Milford were next. Apprentice Riders

There were only seven starters for the Milburn Handicap, for apprentice riders, and Wajtoru was sent out a pronounced favourite, but was beaten into third place. Peacock and Waitoru disputed leadership for most of the journey and entered the straight abreast from Withdrawal, Adina, and Aravane. Peacock was in charge inside ■ the distance, and appeared to have the race in hand until Gusto came from well back to overhaul the leaders and to win comfortably from Peacock with Waitoru and Adina handy. A- Close Tussle Second Innings justified his staunch favouritism for the Burnside Handicap by a narrow but impressive win. Pink Kobe took charge with half the jaurney covered, and led into the straight from Cape Gabo. Second Innings, and Swordstick. The leader failed to carry on and Cape Gabo and Second Innings drew out to engage in a close struggle, ending in the latter gaining a head verdict. Hanlon was a poor third, three lengths in front of Pink Robe, with Night Dress and Swordstick well back. StraJghtdell Returns

Toro Koura, first choice for the Salisbury Handicap, began well, and at the end of two furlongs took charge from

Astral Flash, Straightdell, Master Dingle, and Counterflight. Toro Koura led into the straight, but was soon headed by Straightdell. who went on for a decisive win from Counterflight. The outsider of the field, Tupai, finished from well back to beat the favourite on the post for third money.
